Third-Party Reproduction

Inaugural TPR board DE/DEmbryo/GC Check-in

This group is open to anyone who has already gone through donor egg/donor embryo/gestational carrier, is in the process of it, or plans on doing it in the future. This check-in posted each Tuesday.  If you?d like to be added to this group, please reply to this message, and I?ll make sure to add you for next week.  Welcome to the lurkers!  We know this can be a difficult journey, but we welcome you with open arms.  Let us know if we can answer any questions. GRADUATES ARE WELCOME AND ENCOURAGED TO POST! FACEBOOK GROUP: Yellow_Daisy has restarted a PRIVATE Facebook group (meaning no one can see it in your feed, that you are a member, etc.) for the ladies from IF and SAIF who are using/have used donor eggs/embryos or donor sperm and who are active and consistent posters on the IF, IFV, PAIF, or SAIF boards and the weekly check-in.  If you have been a part of thebump and the check-in and would like to join, please page Yellow_Daisy and ask for an invitation to the group.    Status Update: Where are you currently with the DE/DEmbryo/ GC process? QOTW: (In honor of our first check-in on our own board!)  What are your thoughts about how much more common third-party reproduction is becoming? Do you know anyone IRL who is pursuing this option? Huge hugs to ceemonkey.  We are all here for you and wish you all the best moving forward!!
Hugs and more hugs to Mrs.McIrish. I still can?t believe everything that has happened. I?m so sorry!
Nice work on getting started with the shots BabyVDM! You?re getting close!
liz4paws ? Sounds like you are moving right along! Keep us posted on the insurance situation!
stinkerbell6879 ? Sorry for all the hassles with your insurance. It?s a lot to take in, isn?t it?! I looked into agencies and could just not get on board with the costs. We ended up switching to a new clinic altogether which had an in-house donor pool and a shared risk program. I wish you the best as you make these difficult decisions!
Congratulations chicagobride_07 on your great test results and on your baby girl to be! :)

Re: Inaugural TPR board DE/DEmbryo/GC Check-in

  • Update: We had our transfer yesterday, and everything went well. Our embryo thawed nicely, and we still have one left frozen. My clinic does late betas - mine's not until 2/4.  So I will be taking HPT's before then!

QOTW: I am so encouraged by the increased availability of third-party reproduction options.  I know it helped me a lot when we first started looking into DE to know that others were going this route.  It made it not seem so different.  Overall I'm just thankful that these options are out there and that they seem to be becoming more affordable.  I don't know anyone IRL who has used DE or DS (at least that I know of)...

  • JM I am so glad everything went well..  That is a late beta!!  Everything crossed for you...can't wait for you to start POAS! Wink

I go see RE on the 31st and donor will go around the 1st.  Probably won't actually start intil mid feb, the owner of the agency we are using told me her period will start around the 2/12.  I have been on BCP since Oct.

QOWT: What are your thoughts about how much more common third-party reproduction is becoming? Do you know anyone IRL who is pursuing this option?

I think this is an interesting question. In the world of IF yes IRL no. The few people I have told are still "confused" and don't really understand and they have A LOT of questions. I think it has become more common but still has a way to go. I also feel it doesnt help hollywood perpetuating the idea that someone who is 40 can just get knocked up. But I also appreciate people wanting keep this part of their life private.

I am AMA and all tests on H came back normal
3 failed IVF with OE and 2 failed frozen DE cycles
Last fresh hail mary DE cycle starting Feb 2013

  • JM I am excited for you.  I can't wait to get the updates.  I'm so glad it went well.

I stopped BCP on Friday.  AF has reared her ugly head this morning.  I was worried for a moment that she wouldn't get here in time, but seems we are still on track.  I have u/s tomorrow and start patches on Thursday.    I feel a little lost at the moment.  All we are doing is following the directions on the calendar they gave me, but I have know idea what the drugs are supposed to be doing and how my body is supposed to be responding.  I have had no side effects from the Lupron, I hope it's working.  I keep thinking that maybe it's not getting absorbed. but that's probably all in my head.

We still haven't heard back from the Lab, so our embryo's haven't been made yet.  We are so close, I am wondering if they can time it so that they don't have to be frozen before we transfer in Feb.  But that is all out of my hands so I will wait and see.

QOWT: What are your thoughts about how much more common third-party reproduction is becoming? Do you know anyone IRL who is pursuing this option?

I am happy that there is more information and that it is more common.  I don't know that I would have been able to be this comfortable with this option if I hadn't found the bump and read the stories from successful outcomes from DS/DE/DEmbryo.  It's great to find blogs readily and that there were many options for clinics and banks.  It made things a lot easier for us.

I know a few friends who have chosen to use DS combined with IUI to TTC on their own.  Unfortunately they haven't had success yet.  I don't know of anyone who is using DE though.  But I'm not sharing this with anyone either.  I am leaning towards keeping it that way.  It's mostly for the sake of any children (if we are that lucky), DH and I are still on the fence about whether or not to tell them, but when/if we do, we want it to be their choice whether or not the entire world need know about it.  Ofcourse, that's just how I feel today.

  • I'm so excited that this board exists and we are still doing check-ins!

Update: My stupid period was delayed starting after stopping BCPs but it finally showed up yesterday. That being said, it delayed our transfer date to now be feb 11th instead of feb 8th. Oh well, roll with the punches. :)

My RE is billing my insurance and we are hoping for the best!

QOTW: The only people I know IRL now using TPR are people who I met online through blogs or here. However, my dad has a woman at church who he opened up his mouth and told about our pursuit of embryo adoption and apparently she said her sister adopted embryos and now have twins. I couldn't believe it and figured something got lost in translation so I talked to her myself since she's my neighbor. Sure enough, her sister did adopt embryos through NEDC and now has beautiful b/g twins. We have been incontact on email. Not sure if that counts as IRL or not, but at least it wasn't spawned from the internet. :)

  • JM - How exciting! GL

reb - hopefully your wait goes by quickly :)

VDM - I'm no help on the drug part but I'm sure your doing everything correctly! It's the nerves...hang in there :)

Update: I just found out that I am #10 on the waiting list!! Not sure what that means but I still think I have 3 more months left. The past 3 months surprisingly flew right by.

QOTW : I know 2 IRL friends who used DE and were successful (one is Bubs!) I know few others that I met from The Knot wedding page that I met at the GTG's we had but wouldn't say they are close friends. Part of me wishes I didn't tell as many pp as I did about this. Oh well.

Like others I am glad for this board and my home board that I have been on and for all the blogs/books that pp have recommended.

  • I'm so glad your transfer went well JM!

Update: We hope to cycle again in March, hopefully, I'm on BCPs right now and hope to look at and accept a profile in the next couple weeks.

QOTW: I love that this board now exists, and love that there's so much activity on it! I don't think this is a topic that can be freely discussed yet out IRL, and I'm not saying it necessarily should, but I don't know that I think it should be so taboo. I have some friends that I have shared our problems with and they know we are using donors and are totally supportive. One of those friends is a lesbian couple so they actually ask a lot of questions because they think will be going down a similar path - DS obviously for sure but they ask a lot about DE. So I'm glad we can be a resource for them.

  • Can this newbie be added?

We are currently in our first DE IVF cycle. I started lupron 1/13 and AF showed up today. I'm waiting for a call back fom my RE. We are looking at a mid feb transfer.

We are excited and scared to death!! It's been quite a process the last few years. Had 3 losses before we learned my crappy genetics were the problem. We jumped straight into domestic infant adoption and have been waiting over a year without many prospects. We started looking into DE's beginning of Dec. and quickly made a decision to jump in. We are completely OOP but the money back program we agreed to was about the same cost we had budgeted for an adoption. We get 3 fresh and 3 frozen tries in a 2 year period.

I also have an autoimmune disorder, ulcerative colitis. I take a maintenance medication to keep it in check with occasional flare ups. We have an appt with a MFM  this Friday and I'm curious to see what her opinion on transferring 2 embryos will be.

We've had quite a few ups and downs the past 4 years but I have the best, supportive hubby ever! Whatever happens we lean on each other, and trust me, we've leaned quite a bit lately.

QOTW: I'm glad it's becoming more popular and that it's an option DH and I can be excited about. I don't know anyone IRL that has chosen this route. We've only told our immediate family and some very close friends. I tend to over share when I'm excited about things so I'm hoping I can keep that in check. I'm a bit nervous about when/if this works out about what friends and family will ask since they all pretty much knew we were trying to adopt due to my chromosomal issues....I guess we will cross that bridge when we come to it  :)

9/2011-decided on domestic infant adoption 10/2011-signed with an agency and getting ready for homestudy :)
12-2012-after being with our agency over a year and only shown to EM once we decided to talk with RE about DEIVF. Thru a crazy sequence of events we decided to go for it and we picked a donor MUCH quicker than anticipated
1/13/2013-started lupron with anticipated transfer in mid Feb.
ER 2/15 resulted in 15 eggs/10M/6F with ICSI.
2/18 transferred 1-8cell and 1-9cell embie. Snuggle in little embies.
positive on HPT 6dp3dt. Could this really be IT?!?! Beta 14dp3dt=2440. U/S scheduled for 3/20. Pregnancy Ticker
  • JM - So glad you had a great transfer!  We'll be waiting for the good news!

My update:  Still in fresh vs frozen limbo.  While my clinic is highly regarded, their frozen cycle success rates are really disappointing.  As their wait for fresh is 1 year, I reached out to an agency to inquire about a donor.   At the same time, I've also submitted registration papers to another clinic with better frozen rates.  Hope to have a consult scheduled soon.  I still need to confirm my insurance coverage as well as begin my testing.

QOWT: What are your thoughts about how much more common third-party reproduction is becoming? Do you know anyone IRL who is pursuing this option?   I honestly didn't really know how common it was becoming until I started researching online.  I do have a very good friend IRL who has a DD by donor egg.  She has been an invaluable resource for me and is so patient with my billions of questions.

A funny note:  there are two women at my new job who I've decided must have used DE.  They are both in their early 50s and have 2 and 3 year old twins.  Pretty sure they didn't get pregnant at 50 with their own eggs.   I probably would not have given it much thought if DE wasn't on my own radar.

  • Can you another newbie?  We matched with a donor through an agency last week and are waiting to have her approved by our clinic.  I just found out that my insurance won't cover anything until I have day two blood draws on an unmedicated cycle.  Um, hello?  I have NO clue when or if my next day two will happen - that's part of the reason I'm going the DE route.  When will insurance companies get it?

QOTW:  I'm excited about all of the options that are out there for people to become parents.  I was one of the first of my friends to do IVF so I've been sort of their guide through all of it.  None of them have had to move to DE and no one knows that we're doing it and we have no plans to tell anyone other than immediate family.  I would love to talk to someone IRL but then I'd have to "come out". :)

    IVF 1 - March 2012 - BFP - lost baby at 20 weeks IVF 2 - September 2012 - cancelled - no response - ridiculously high FSH IVF 2.1 - October 2012 - never even got off the ground Spring 2013 - DE hopeful
