Last night was HORRIBLE! We do a bed time routine and he is usually out by 9pm. He woke up at 11:00. DH and I thought ok we really need to do something about this night waking b/c I go back to school on Monday and am also going to be working. LO cried for 2 hours (so did I) and I just couldnt take it anymore and I went in and gave him a bottle. He finally settled and went to sleep after bottle and rocking for an hour. Then he woke up again at 3:30. I tried to give him a bottle of water (pedi's recommendetion) and it just pissed him off even more so he started flailing around. The only way that he was settled was giving him another bottle. I am really reaching out for some kind of help. We tried the Ferber and LO just gets more pissed off if I go in there and dont pick him up and even more upset if he sees me leave. Sometimes he gets himself so worked up he vomits. uggghhhhhh
Vent over. Thx
Re: In need of some MAJOR reassurance!
I'm sorry you had such a rough night. 2 months ago, if we had tried Ferber, we would have had the exact same situation you described. Our LO just wasn't ready for it yet. He will never be calmed by my presence in the room, and water definitely is not what he wants. There were times that I gave him Motrin for teething pain, and he eagerly took it and started screaming, because it wasn't milk.
It's very obvious that every kid is different. For us, it took 3 months to get to where we are, and we still aren't STTN. We started with getting him to fall asleep on his own for naps. That took a month+. Slowly yet surely, we are now able to get him to fall asleep for bed on his own. Since then, he has started to put himself back to sleep in the MOTN. Last night, he woke at midnight to eat, only took one side, and went right back down in less than 5 minutes. He woke back up at 5:30, which is when I usually get him up on weekdays to nurse (so not his fault). By then, my other boob was a rock anyway, so I nursed him on both sides, and he went back down until 7/7:30. That was the most the two of us have ever slept.
Our pedi told us that he needed to fall asleep on his own, and that would help him STTN. I thought she was dumb. We only have done a true CIO for going to sleep (though, that's rare now), and he'll fuss in his sleep, but never a true cry anymore. I was never comfortable with CIO in the middle of the night. I'm amazed at how productive I can still be after getting up 3+x/night since I went back to work 4 months ago. Hang in there. It'll get better.

And he puts himself to sleep for naps and bedtime so I'm not sure it's that he can't put himself back to sleep and that's why he's up.
I'm curious to see what responses u get!
