Food Allergy

XP from Breastfeeding: Possible milk protein allergy?

I am suspecting my almost 5-month-old may have an allergy to dairy.  She has been on Zantac for about a month as initially I had thought it was reflux but since the symptoms aren't getting any better I am going to eliminate dairy from my diet to see if that makes a difference.  Any advice from others who have gone dairy would be great.  I know to look for whey and casein but this seems like it is going to to be a lot more difficult than I thought (but I am more than willing to do it for my daughter).  Also, what symptoms did your LO have?  Thanks!

  • You should also avoid all things with soy since they have similar intolerance/allergy reactions.

My son had bad reflux, colic and blood in his stool with occasional mucus.

  • With milk allergy you usually have some sort of rash. My first ped Said my dd had baby acne but it was actually eczema (I say first ped bc we obviously dropped her after she couldn't recognize her milk allergy!). She also had serious cradle cap. She would scream bloody murder during every burp after every feeding and all day long when she wasn't sleeping. I don't know when allergies usually develop but ours was from day 1. What you probably need to do is switch to a more powerful reflux med. Prevacid would probably be the next step. We started with half a 15 mg solutab a day then switched to full tab. We also had to give maalox to her at least once a day for a while. You may need to see a GI doc if ur ped can't help as much. It's not a bad thing they are just gen docs and some aren't as educated in the tummy area. It's all a GI doc does so they know what they are talking about. Check into Prevacid and maalox. That should help. You may run into issues getting Prevacid. The generic is no longer being made and some insurance companies are unaware of this shortage. Keep fighting they will cover it. And maalox you can use generic. It works. Check with doc on dosage. GL! It doesn't sound like the experience we had with the allergy. Just reflux. But it wouldn't hurt to cut out dairy. Just do one change at a time so u know what is fixing the problem. ;)
