Umbilical cord bleeding a bit

My DD is 17 days old and tonight while going to clean her cord I noticed it is bleeding a bit. Is this normal?  should I still clean it with alcohol? Should we call her dr? I dont think it is bothering her to touch it, but it is a bit red since it is bleeding. I wiped it clean with a baby wipe a few times. What needs to happen here? Any advice would be helpful :)

Re: Umbilical cord bleeding a bit

  • DS is 14 days today. I noticed a bit of blood on his cord a few days ago. I did exactly what you've done but otherwise left it alone. I think it was irritated by him or his waste band. It fell off yesterday, I wouldn't bee too concerned unless its a lot of blood and isn't drying up

  • They told us to never clean the umbilical cord, to just leave it alone when we were in the hospital. It's probably not a big deal if it's just a little blood but I wouldn't hesitate to call if it makes you nervous.
  • Our pedi had said to call if it bled more than a thimble full, which would be enough to soak through a onsie. DD2's fell off Early, at only 5 days old, it would leave a drop or two of blood for a few days, but not a thimble full or more so we didn't touch it and it was fine.

  • DD is 21 days old and we've had slight bleeding off and on for over a week now (large portion of the cord is gone, just a "scab type" portion remaining). Her pedi looked at it and said it was completely normal. We're still putting alcohol on it every other diaper change but the doctor said it would completely heal/fall off on it's own. It's not an open wound or she'd scream when we put alcohol on it.  I think you're probably fine to do nothing or just wipe with a wipe or alcohol swabs, but definitely check with your pedi if you're still concerned!
  • You shouldn't need to do anything.

Also, just FYI for you and the pp, you shouldn't be putting alcohol on it. Cleaning it with alcohol so often is the reason it hasn't fallen off yet. The cord has a particular type of bacteria or something else, can't remember what the dr said that will cause it to fall off on its own. When you clean it with alcohol, it removes that good bacteria and the cord stays on longer. Without cleaning it, it should fall off naturally when the baby is one to two weeks old.

Our dr says that this is fairly new information. In the past, drs would always say to clean it, but that isn't the case anymore.
  • About a day or two before it fell off, I noticed little spots of blood on baby's diaper and onsie. I didn't panic because it wasn't much and didn't seem infected or anything. Anyway, it fell off shortly after and is perfect. I'm thinking maybe the bleeding is a part of the final healing...

We were told by our pediatrician to clean it with alcohol every diaper change, her cord fell off in a week. So it worked fine for us. Lo's cord also bled a little right before it fell off was told to keep cleaning it with alcohol and if it was bleeding a lot to take gauze and put a little pressure on it but it never bled a lot.
