WM's Vacation time?

What kind of vacation time do you get?  Do you get a set amount of days per year, or do you earn them per pay period.  Are sick days and vacation days broken out seperately?  What about DH, how does his vacation time work? 

I always wonder what kind of time off other people get.

  • I get 23 days per year of PTO (personal time off).  That is a combination of sick days, vacation days, personal days, etc.  It is accrued throughout the year, so I accrue about 1 day per 2 week pay period, but I can always borrow against future PTO if needed and approved.

    My DH gets 6 weeks of vacation and unlimited sick days (INSANE!), but truthfully, his job would likely be in jeopardy if he actually took 6 weeks off per year.  It just wouldn't be feasible for him to perform well taking that kind of time off. 

    Can I hijack your post and ask two other questions - do people usually take all their vacation time?  Is your work typically supportive of taking all of your vacation time?

  • We earn half a day of sick and half a day of annual leave time per pay period.  So that's 13 days of each per year.  We can roll our days over from year to year up to like 150 days, then it gets credited to your retirement or something like that.  My supervisors really don't have a problem with us using our days, except in October because we are in full force budget season and it's usally all hands on deck.  But if we really needed the day I'm sure we could get it off.

    DH has three weeks of vacation.  He has to take two of them in full week increments and he has the option to do a week or take 7 individual days.  Otherwise if he's not at work he doesn't get paid.  They pick their vacation every November so we usually have to plan ahead for any vacations, and he usually takes three full weeks.  I think he earns another week when he gets to 10 years on the job, which is three years from now.

    I don't take all my time at my current job.  Just because I can roll it over I plan to use some during any future maternity leaves and the rest helps you buy into retirement earlier.  Plus, who really needs 13 days of sick time?  Well, then again I see how often some LO's are sick so I guess it makes sense.

    At my old job in retail we had 17 PTO days and everyone always used them all.  If not, you just lost them, you could only roll over one day to be used the next January.  We also had to request well in advance because only one manager could be off at a time.  And there was no such thing as calling in.  I was in shock when I got to my current job and so many people called out sick or decided to take an annual day the day before.  I had never called into work in 6 years, except the time I nearly passed out in the back room and my doctor wrote me out of work for two more days, but that was an extreme situation.

  • I accumulate a bit each pay period and it works out to a little more than 2 weeks per year. I also accrue 1 sick day a month. I'm harldy ever sick, but I can use it for Connor's dr. apprts or my appts.

    Dh gets 2 weeks vacation, no sick.

    We both use all of ours up, its not frowned upon. The only people that are frowned upon at my work is if you use up all your sick time and keep calling out sick, even though its unpaid at that point.

  • I get three weeks of annual leave and three weeks of sick leave a year, plus 6 personal days. The personal days must be used or you lose them. The rest can be carried from year to year. We can carry up to 600 hours of annual and unlimited sick time. At 10 years I will start earning another week of annual. We can't borrow against what we will earn that year, you only have what you have earned by that point. I am currently stock piling sick leave for our next LO in a few years. I don't take all my leave each year but that is because I like to carry some as a cushion in case I need it.

    DH earns 4 weeks of vacation and I think 6 sick days. He has the max he can carry over so he will have to take all his vacation this year.

  • I accrue hours of annual leave and sick leave every month. Time accrued is based on time of service. For up to 5 years, we accrue 7.5 hours of both a month. Our work days are 7.5hrs. After 5 years, it's 11.3hrs of annual leave and still 7.5hrs of sick leave. I think the annual hours accrual changes every 5 years up to 20 years adding essentially half a day, but sick leave accrual does not change. It also rolls...it's not a use it or lose it kind of thing. The only thing that happens is after so many accrues hours of annual leave, it's something like 350hrs, the hours over that start rolling into sick leave.

  • We get hours of vacation and sick time as opposed to days. I accrue 14 hours of vacation time and 12 hours of sick time every month. We can earn up to something like 200 vacation hours before we lose it but the total we can accrue increase the longer we work there.

    There are people who use all of their vacation time but then there are others who still have hundreds of hours. Generally my work is supportive of us taking the time we need as long as we don't abuse the time like taking too much sick time or not scheduling vacation time in advance.

  • I get 10 vacation days to start (once I hit 3 years I get 15) plus 5 floating holidays because we only have 6 company ones. Because I'm salaried I can take sick days without dipping into vacation or floating holiday time as long as I don't abuse it. And yes, I take every.single.day. Carryover is frowned on and my company (maybe just my manager, I can't speak for everyone) is really good about making us take the time! The downside is that we can't take any days off in December or January because it is our busiest time and we just can't cover vacations. One day is ok but nothing more.

  • I get 23 days of PTO per calendar year (this is everything: vacation, sick).  Ours increases based on number of years of employment.  We technically earn the hours per pay period, but my department just lets you use them whenever throughout the year.  I can take them in whole or half day increments.  DH has fabulous vacation.  He works in a government job and he earns I think 3/4 of a day per pay period (it's broken out into some amount of hours) for vacation, and I think the same for sick.  They are seperate for him. 

    My PTO days don't rollover - we can rollover just 5 days but they have to be used by March of the following year.  Otherwise, use or lose.  They encourage everyone to use PTO , and I always use it all.  DH can roll his over - I think he has at least 6 weeks of PTO banked now - there is no limit.  He has over 1000 hours of sick time accrued as well.  When he gets enough, they transfer some over to pay and add it to his check for the sick time.  Incentive for not getting sick I guess.

  • I get 20 days vacation and 6 days sick.  However, I only use my sick time if I am on my death bed; the expectation is that I will work from home and be on all essential calls, meet all essential dates as possible.  When the kids are sick, the upside is, I never have to burn a sick day (unless I am WAY overwhelmed; last Fall I did work two half days when DH was out of town, I was sick, DS was sick and DD was on a crazy misbehaviour tear).  This week, DS is sick, and I worked 6 hours yesterday and will work 7 today, and won't take any PTO.  I also worked 9-10 hours T, W and worked 2 hours on the MLK holiday....I will also work some on Saturday to keep up.

    We cannot roll anything over.  My boss encourages me to take my time.  She also randomly gives me time.  Last week she told me to leave to pick up my kids and host a playdate 1 day a month "at least".  I will be doing this one day and month and am super excited!

    DH gets 21 days off per year.  His situation is weird too.  Because he travels he can mess around more on a Friday and as long as his work is done no one cares.  Today he took a sick day, but chances are it will never hit his PTO bank because he's billed so many hours already.  It's not formal and there is no rhyme or reason to it - last Fall we figured out this happens and don't know why when we had tracked our days off and he had 7 more left than I did - I was outraged (OK, OK, I was jealous).

  • I accrue 8.15 per each 2 week pay period. That's for sick or vacation. What sucks is if we are closed for a holiday or bad weather wr have to use that time as well.
    If you call in sick 3 times in six months you get verbal counseling. 5 in 12 months written warning. 9 in 12 months. There is no excused abscence if it's not pre planned. So even if im airlifted to the ER it's unexcused. Needless to say with 2 young kids and no family help I've already been verbally counseled.

  • I earn 1.25 days of vacation and 0.5 days sick leave every month. I can borrow time, but can't be negative at the end of the year.

  • Full timers at my company get 2 weeks paid vacation for 0-4 years and at 5 years we get 3 weeks paid. I dont know what happens after that. I think it goes up to 4 or 5. I'm only at 3.

  • Oh and I never use it all. You have to request a roll-over to be approved or not and it has to be used w/in the first quarter.
