What languages is your LO learning?

I am just curious what languages you are teaching LO, or if you are not. How are you teaching them?

Our first language is English. DH speaks French, I only have the French we had to learn in school and I only went to grade 9 so I am not very good with it. DH plans to talk a bit of French with DS. He will also get French in school here until highschool where he can then choose to continue with it or switch to a different language. If we move back to Canada he will still get French in school.

I learned sign language when I was 13 just out of pure interest. I have actually been signing some with DS. I think it will be handy to communicate that way with each other when we don't want to scare away animals when we are outside. Also useful with sore throats.

I have taken an interest in learning a bit of Scottish Galeic. I only know a few phrases but would like to learn more. We don't let DS watch TV yet but when he is old enough, the children's chanel here is in Scotish Gaelic. It would be fun if he picked that up a bit.

Hopefully he'll pick up Spanish, but we failed with ODS with that one. We just speak more English than anything. But both my husband and I speak, read, and write Spanish.

We only speak English, but his DCP is Chinese, so he's learning that at daycare. We live in a very diverse area, so I'm hoping he can continue to learn Chinese when he starts school.

That is awesome! That is a useful language too.

Hubs speaks spanish very fluently [I can get by if necessary] but we really haven't been taking to Nene in it. I wanted her to learn french because I know there are so many opportunities especially with an international airport ip the street. I've been failing in that part.
I say some german and korean phrases when I need her to move. She knows I'm serious then. Other than that....just English.
She learned some sign language in school and had a little skit using it. I also am starting to use it with Amir.

I learned Spanish as an exchange student so I plan to teach him that. If I do open a daycare, I'll teach everyone Spanish and most of the schools in Chicago have Spanish as a weekly class. I'd like to have him learning more intensely though. It's really useful.

I speak only in Spanish with DS and DH speaks only in English with him. I do sometimes read him books in English, but I talk about them and the illustrations in Spanish. I have also started using baby sign language (with ASL signs) with him. Depending on where he goes to school and what languages they offer, I would ideally like him to learn another language as well.

I only speak English but DH and his family speak Italian. I'm hoping DS learns some Italian. His daycare also teaches the kids sign language, which I think is pretty cool, too.

The only lanugage I speak as of right now is English. I have been seriously tossing around purchasing Rosetta Stone Spanish. I would love to learn to speak Spanish.

It will be very important to me that my child learn another language.

DH speaks German and he reads some books to Mina. We'll see what actually happens.
In Utah there are several schools that have language immersion programs. Math and science are taught in the immersion language and the other subjects are in English. I think there are programs in Spanish, French and Mandarin.

French and English. DH speaks only French to the kids, I do what I feel like doing in the moment. We try to privilege French in the house since they'll always get English. DD is in an immersion French pre-school and chooses to speak more French than English at home, but knows, for example, to speak English with her grandparents.We have a lot of books and cd's in French, plus dh does some youtube cartoons. We may get an au pair in the next year or so. We go to Quebec in the summers and would like to get dd in a daycamp this year.

I will say this: because you talk to your kid for a long time before they talk back, we weren't really sure what would happen when dd started to talk, but it's worked out better than we thought it would. We do really have to look for opportunities to talk with other Francophones, and have found a nice community of people raising their kids bilingual.

SO is first generation here. His parents are from Mexico and didn't move here until they were 20. His dad doesn't speak much English, which I'm kind of thankful for because S will have no choice but to speak Spanish to him. We read to S in Spanish and SO speaks mostly in Spanish to him because he speaks it fluently. I can read, write, and understand it fluently, but I hate speaking it. I will if need be though.

English and Spanish. I try to speak as much Spanish to DD as possible but sometimes I forget and speak English. My mom takes care of her and I have asked that she speak only Spanish to her. DH and his family speak mostly English to DD. I am fluent in both languages and hope DD will be too. Living in Southern California, this is extremely important.

I wish I spoke another language. I told my best friend she has to teach J spanish so he can be ahead of the game. She speaks spanish to him, and he thinks it is hilarious.

MIL speaks Thai as she grew up there. DF has visited Thailand a handful of times but didn't pick up any of the language. His grandmother moved here 20 years ago and still only speaks Thai, so he can't really communicate with her unless his mom is there. DF and I had a goal of learning Thai and then going back when we started dating, but that was a big fail. I think it would be cool if DD learned it though!

I agree that living in socal its useful knowing spanish. I SAH so it's really up to me. My mom and pretty much every other member on my side prefer to speak Spanish. We were all born in Peru and didn't come here until I was 5. I try and do some Spanish with DD. She's pretty good at it. My side speaks to the kids in spanish and DD understands it.
DH speaks only English but wants to learn French. My French is rusty so I'd have to brush up on it.

I'm fluent in French from taking immersion classes from high school and refresher classes in college. Husband only has a midling grasp on French, though, so it would mostly be up to me if I wanted her to learn it. I don't speak to her in French everyday, so I don't know how much she'll pick up. I didn't know if it even mattered at this stage. Maybe I'll pick up the pace, though. That reminds of something I wanted to say in that other post - I don't like Caillou either

DH is has degrees in both French and Spanish, so he can teach both languages to the boys. I speak enough Spanish to get by, but I'm by no means fluent. We will/do work with the boys on Spanish first because we believe that will be more beneficial to them at an earlier age. DH will probably teach them a little French as they get older, but our main focus will be Spanish. Our elementary schools here have a language program that introduces Spanish, French, German, and Chinese, so both boys will be in that. When they get to middle/high school, DH will not allow them to take Spanish (because they will already know it, and it will be too easy for them), so they will have to choose another language to study at that age. They will most likely not choose French either because they won't want DH as their teacher.....but, that's cool because it means that they'll have to study yet another language! Wink
