CDers a ?

What is your diaper pail situation like?  What do you use as a pail?  Do you use a liner?  Do you use a lid?  How's the smell?  Like, is it contained to the pail, and inside is it awful?

Jay says I MUST get our CD stank situation under control before baby #3.  As in, he doesn't want to smell it.at.all.  Typically, I do CD laundry every 3rd day.   Is he being unrealistic?

  • I do diaper laundry daily to control stink. P pees an it almost instantly smells like amonia. Her room smells like a hamster cage in the morning. If I was every 2 days I can't get the stink out of the diapers.

We use a garbage can with a lid, and a Pail liner.

  • With an every 3rd day routine...maybe a little.

I was every other day, at most.  I use a PlanetWise liner.  It's antibacterial, really does make a difference in the stink - I used a pail sans liner for about a week and WOOF, it was bad.  With liner, you do NOT smell anything until the lid is opened.  On that note, I do use a lid on my pail, but I hear not using a lid is actually better for the stink because it allows fresh air into the pail and keeps moisture from building up, thereby slowing down the bacteria that cause stinkies.  Also, I use Bac-Out enzyme spray and that takes the smell down even further.

Let's just put it this way - I had to strip the other day (hard water, bad stinkies) and when I opened my pail to dump in the dipes it still wasn't as bad as when I wasn't using a liner or the Bac-Out.

  • I use a pail with lid (ikea trash can) and a planet wise liner.  It seals really tightly. It doesn't stink unless you open the pail. I actually push my washing a lot (5 days is not abnormal as I have so many dipers) and haven't had any big issues.  The inserts smell a little off when they first come out of the dryer, but they're also due for stripping. I use bac out when I think about it.

  • DD's pee stinks, like really stinks. That said I don't think her diaper pail smells too terrible. SO never complains.  We use a plastic garbage pail with an anti-bac liner.  When that is in the wash we use a big wet bag.  I try and wash every other day. I can go three but that's when we start to get stink.

I don't overnight cloth a lot because it seems like her pee is so strong that it burns her a bit.  The redness goes away quickly but it looks painful.

I've stripped diapers. Is it totally necessary or just when there is build up and absorbency issues?

  • We have a trashcan with a lid. The kind where you step on the pedal and it pops up. We have 2 different pail liners. I'm not sure what my older liner is but it doesn't contain smell as well. My new one is a Planetwise anti-microbial liner and it contains stink like you wouldn't believe. I only do diaper laundry every 3-4 days unless I happen to be home and decide to just get a load going. On the third Day the ammonia smell begins to get strong when you open the lid. I don't feel like we have major stink issues. If we're having guests over I'm always sure to move the pail/empty it just incase. The pail is in Lj's bathroom and we hardly ever go in there unless we're dumping diapers.

I generally strip when I notice smell when drying.

  • Covered el-cheapo kitchen garbage with kangaroo care liner.  I am a lazy and have realized when sick that it was a week since I last washes (yeah also have too many diapers) but I have often gone four days.  I don't know twice it unless the lid is open or the poopy diapers are in a bummies wet bag.  Note the poopy diapers are always separate in a wet bag.
