Breast pump recommendations?

I am looking into buying a breast pump, and wanted to see if any one had any recommendations?  I am looking to spend less than $300 and would rather spend closer to $150.  I'm going to be a SAHM and I will be pumping for connivence sake, and not for a daily milk supply.  I was looking at the Medela Pump in style or the Lansinoh double electric.  Any experience with these or suggestions of others?

 TIA

Re: Breast pump recommendations?

  • FTM here. And still preggo, so I can't recommend yet. But check with your insurance before buying. They may cover most or all of a breast pump.

  • Agree with PP about checking with your insurance first- I believe under the new health care laws, they're required to cover pumps this year.

I had a Medela PISA (tote bag version) and loved it.  It was a work horse of a pump for me.  I started pumping at around 2 weeks because of latch issues, so maybe pumped 1 or 2 times per day until 3 months, and then when I went back to work, I was using it at least 4 times a day until DS was a year.  If you get a hands free bra with this model, you can sit and use your hands (check email, eat, etc.).  The Medela freestyle you can apparently walk around and pump with, so if you're at home and need to be doing stuff around the house, that might be a good option too, although if it's just for light use, maybe a single pump would be fine.

This exactly. Had the PISA, loved it and used it for a year. I would definitely recommend it.

  • Thanks ladies!  Our insurance only covers it if we have issues.  I heard that with the affordable health care act you should be able to rent them, and your insurance will cover them.  I wasn't sure if the same you have to have an issue rule would apply.

The ACA provision doesn't restrict the pump coverage to people who are having problems/issues- so definitely check with your insurer.

  • Good to know.  I will see if i can get a prescription and see how things go from there.  I've gotten the run around from my insurance a little.  They always tell me something different.  It is clear i need a prescription, but maybe I don't have to have an 'issue'.

  • Our insurance only  covers if there is a prescription which our pedi happily wrote. I use the Medela Symphony during the day which we rent and the Medela PISA when we are not at home. I love both!

  • My local target had the avent double electric down to 59 from 199. You may want to check yours!
  • I love the Avent Double Electric (Isis or something along hat line)!

Not all insurances, unfortunately. I have Tricare, and they do not cover unless there is a need such as a NICU admission.

This is true, but most private insurers are required to cover breast pumps beginning in August 2012 (depending on when your plan year resets).  Medicaid, military and grandfathered health plans are exempt from the requirement.

  • Medela PISA.  I am a SAHM, too.  This pump is awesome and I don't regret spending the money on it.  Baby Depot has it for cheaper than BRU and Target and you can find a 15-20% off coupon.

Ameda Purely Yours worked great for us.

Yes  This is the one I have, and it's been great. I pumped up to 1 year while I was at work for both DDs and occasionally before and after that. The Ameda customer service is great if you ever have any problems.

Also, Ameda is a closed loop system, so milk physically can't get into the tubing. The Medela pump is not like that. That was a big reason that I chose the Ameda.

From what I've read, the Lansinoh double pump is the same as the Ameda.

And some may only cover a manual pump, which is what mine does. So, not ll that great.

  • If you are only pumping for convenience you may want to look into the swing. More in your price range and a great pump.
