Infertility

Intro

Hello all. I'd like to reintroduce myself. In 2008, I had two miscarriages and relied heavily on these boards for support. In 2009, we began seeing an RE, but really didn't get very far into TTC again because work had me out of town most of the time.  We were doing the best we could when we could. So at the end of 2010,  I finally decided to quit my wonderful job and focus on starting this family because the age was creeping up on me!  That July I found out I had thyroid cancer. Well, that put a halt to the baby making.   I got cancer free <yay!> and tried  IUI in November and December 2012.  BFNs.  Oh. And I turned 40 in December despite my efforts.

The RE gave us the option to try IUI again or move on to IVF. We chose IVF.  We went Tuesday for our teaching appointment. Also had a SA (perfect score for the DH),  hysteroscopy (things were as they should be) and  lab work. I left with a head full of information I really didn't know what to do with. I came home and made a calendar so that.MAYBE I won't forget something.  So today I got my meds in the mail ($3000!) and I went through the box. Holy hell!  How does anyone keep all of this straight and not mess something up?  And how in the world do you muster up the courage to give yourselves these shots!?!

So that's a quick update on my situation.  I'm willing myself to have the most positive attitude about this new adventure. I'm so over the TTC difficulties!  I hope to learn from you all and look forward to getting to know you.

  • Did your RE give you a schedule-type thing for which meds to do on which day?  That was a huge help for me.  Also, I was only using one or two meds at a time, so there wasn't much to really remember on a given day.  I set an alarm on my cell phone for the same time each night for the shots.

    In terms of giving them to myself, I didn't!  Lol I HATE needles.  Can't even watch them go in, can't look at them right before they go in, etc.  DH did all my shots for me.

  • Hi vegas!  welcome back although it stinks you have to be here.  congratulations on kicking cancer's ass and if you can make it through that, IVF should be a breeze! :)

    i had a thyroid biopsy years ago and was one of the most painful things i have ever had happen to me (would absolutely NEVER do again without sedation and told my endocrinologist such).  this is my first IVF, but I have done injectables with IUI before so i'm not too concerned with the meds (with the exception of the intramuscular shots- those do concern me too!)

    just wanted to welcome you and hope your stay here is short!

    Me (37) DH (39); PCOS changed to Unexplained, changed to DOR in 2012 (finally a correct diagnosis!);
    Started TTC 2009 with RE after 6 months.
    Clomid + Trigger x2;
    IUI + Femara x1,
    IUI + Follistim x2;
    IVF #1 (MDL) February 2013- BFN.
    IVF #2 (antagonist) May 2013, First BFP of my life.
    Identical twin miracle BOYS (!!) headed our way- due date is technically 2/4/14 but c section is scheduled for 1/7!

  • Thanks for the welcome ladies. Flower, I did get the schedule (I start injections on Feb 1). After seeing it I thought, "I got this."  But after I saw everything in the box this morning I freaked!   I feel the same way you do about needles. Hate 'em.

    Jezebel... thank you for reminding me about the biopsy! Surely if I can handle that...of course, I didn't have to do it myself or watch it happen!

     Looking forward to learning from you girls!

  • Welcome to the board. Wow, you've had a hard journey *hug*. I am so sorry for your losses. Many of us know how overwhelming everything can be - especially the meds! But before you know it, you'll be a pro - I promise. We all felt the same way in the beginning. The shots are easy once you get past the nerves of that first one. Never hesitate to ask your doctor questions, watch instructional videos (youtube is great!), and of course some here and ask questions. No such thing as a dumb question. I wish you loads of luck.

  • Welcome, and yay to kicking cancer's butt! Like everyone else has said, the meds can be overwhelming, but you'll catch on quick! Don't think about the needles too much....just do it! Lol! Hope your stay here is short & sweet!

    Married 2007
    3 Clomid IUIs -- BFNs
    IVF #1 never made it to transfer
    On "egg health" cocktail DHEA/CoQ10/FRC/Pregnitude/Melatonin
    Starting IVF #2 for Feb 2013
    Follistim/Menopur/Ganirelix
    Cancelled mid-cycle due to high P4 levels early on.
    OCPs again for IVF 2.5 mid-March. IVF 2.5 transferred two "gorgeous" 5-day blasts and BFFN. Even REI is baffled
    On indefinite hold until a huge stroke of serendipity led me to IVF 3 May 2014
    Testing found positive cardiolipins/APS, now on lovenox and intralipid infusions
    Transfer of 2 5-day blasts and (FINALLY) BFFP!! 1st ultrasound shows two sacs and two HB, but one is sluggish, almost expecting vanishing twin Subsequent ultrasound confirmed vanishing twin, but my other Little critter looks fantastic!

  • Welcome! Sorry you have to be here - hopefully your stay here will be short. As far as keeping things straight I did two things. First, I found a calendar on Google Drive and typed in all my meds for each day on it. Then I took my giant box of meds and split it up into groups. First group was stims. I needed those from the start. Second group was for between ER (egg retrieval) and ET (embryo transfer). Third group was for after ET. That way I didn't have such a huge group of meds to go through every night when I wasn't using all of them. GL on your cycle!
  • :) thank you all!  I am totally going to take your advice and group the meds!  Excellent idea. Good luck to everyone as well!!
