Pregnant after IF

Insurance Company Sponsored Maternity Programs

So, I got a letter in the mail inviting me to join the BCBS "Special Beginnings" program.  I googled and women all over are raving about how great it is to receive coupons, a $50 Target gift card, special incentives for joining this program.

I think IF has made me a bit jaded.  My RE and I just spent 4 months trying to get PIO covered (for during my pregnancy) which the insurance company denied because they said it could cause harm to the fetus.  After a "peer to peer review" and months of paperwork, they announced they'd cover it, but at a "specialty biotechnology" co-pay of $100 a vial (PIO is about $40 a vial, so essentially, they weren't covering it).  Just a mess.  I have plenty other examples of the madness.

The "Special Beginnings" program letter says that "ideally a women is enrolled in her first trimester.  A confidential interview determines if her pregnancy is at risk."

The jaded individual in me doesn't like this.  If my OB determines I am high risk, and sends me to a peri, is the Special Beginnings program going to start telling the insurance to deny my claims because they don't agree?  My OB has 30+ years of experience and other sub specialists he can reach out to, pretty sure I don't need confirmation of high risk status or how to proceed with treatment from an individual on a hotline.  I don't like this level of additional oversight coming directly from the insurance company.

So tell me, am I totally off here?  Just thinking of signing up for this, getting $50 from Target and coupons to BRU, and thousands in denied medical claims.

I don't see any other concerns on this on the internet......

  • I'm sorry to hear you've had to go through all this crap while getting pregnant.  As if going through all that IF treatment isn't physically, emotionally, and financially draining to begin with!

I can't speak to your specific situation, but can tell you that I discovered my program during 2nd tri, which paid $150 at that point, and required a couple of phone calls during the pregnancy, and 1 follow-up, very painless.

This time, because I knew about it, I signed up during 1st tri and will get $250.  I have had one interview so far, and won't hear from them again until well into 2nd tri, so I imagine no more than 3 more calls, plus follow-up.  I had a very good experience with them, and there did not appear to be any issues with it relating to my insurance coverage.  I have Cigna, FWIW.

  • I just did the interview for Aetna a minute ago.  All the interview determines is if you are at risk for PTL or additional program benefits, nothing to with coverage at all.  Unluckily mine is just sending me the same damn book they sent me 2 years ago, they should really switch up the "gifts" every year or so.

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • I do Anthem's Future Mom's program and got a 100 gift card just for calling the first time, then I'll get 50 at 28 wks and 50 more when baby is born I think. They send a voucher then you can choose from a ton of places to get your gift card. The questions I answered were really basic and they gave me tips on how to reduce stress, getting more calcium, etc. I recommend it!

  • Wow, I didn't get anything for participating in mine through United except some annoying phone calls where I'd have to repeat all my info a million times.  They weren't helpful, and I got nothing out of it.  I'd have dealt with all the calls for a few hundred bucks!  lol

  • I don't believe I get anything for participating, but I figure I would since it is free. Their maternity division is completely separate from the insurance part of it and so I don't believe that it would affect decisions regarding your coverage.

It sounded to me like they just want you to make the best choices to have a healthy pregnancy/baby, which saves them money. They advocate a vaginal delivery when possible and breast feeding. I'm not sure that I'll "get" anything from participating as it seems pretty elementary, but oh well.
