I don't want to be intrusive but if you don't mind I would love to get your opinion on a vet question.
My Bassett Hound will be 15 this year which I have been told is pretty ancient for a Bassett. She has been on Rimadyl and Tramadol for her arthritis and she is doing fabulous and is otherwise healthy. When I went to refill her Rx through the vet they refused to refill it until they did blood work to make sure her liver was OK. I was not thrilled about this but I agreed I would let them do the tests.
My question is...If her liver enzymes are high what would they do? Would they take her off the meds and let her be miserable? I am just having a hard time comprehending the necessity for this because I believe she is going to die sooner from old age rather than later from possible liver issues from her meds. I would rather her liver enzymes be a bit high than for her to have pain and be miserable.
Would you mind explaining this to me and clarifying the potential thought process so that I can better understand? I was going to ask my vet but I didn't want it to come off the wrong way that I was challenging her expert opinion.
Re: ***Packersfan***
Thanks so much for your response and expert input! This makes sense to me now and I can also understand that if she is not metabolizing it properly then it probably isn't providing much benefit either. If I remember correctly her dosage is 50 mg 2x per day. She gets 1/2 a chewable 2x per day and I believe it is the 100 mg chewable.
I just don't want my pup to suffer and on the meds she seems to be doing terrific. Thanks again as I greatly appreciated your opinion!
40 lbs!
My pups are lean, mean, howling machines (heehee).
