Intro and Advice Needed

Hi,

My son is 2 years 4 months. He is pretty delayed in speech. He says maybe 20 word approximations but only a few spontaneously, most it takes a few tries for him to get out right. He tries very hard to communicate and holds convos with us in his own way. He has been in speech for about 7 months and is making progress very slowly. I am happy with the fact that he is making progress. They suspect a motor issue such as appraxia. Cognitively he's great and he understands directions, etc. he's a little sensitive to new things but nothing that would cause a tantrum. he's social and very happy.

I work in the field of special Ed so I am very aware of disabilities because I am surrounded by them everyday. It's very hard for me to not worry that I am doing everything I can for him and that he will be ok.

He receives two hours speech and one hour OT a week. Is there anything I'm missing? Would a developmental pedi shed any light or I am best sticking with the speech therapist as far as diagnosis?

When he transitions to the district what will they offer him? Do most kids with a major delay in only one area attend a developmental preschool? Obviously there is no one answer, just looking for any experiences.

Sorry so long and thanks for listening.

  • It seems like you're doing everything you should be doing. With potential apraxia the more frequent therapy, the better. Two hours a week is great--just make sure that's broken up into more sessions. I don't think its a horrible idea to get a referral to a developmental pedi if your child has a developmental delay.

Kids in my district do not qualify for integrated preschool with an apraxia dx. They get drop in speech and that's it. Every district is different though--your EI coordinator should be able to give you a better idea of what services he could potentially qualify for assuming he doesn't drastically improve in the next 8 months.

FWIW, my son was given a diagnosis of suspected apraxia at 22 months. He was probably where your son is at language wise when he was 28 months. At 2.5 he had a language explosion and started speaking in 6 word sentences. He does have an IEP through the school district for an artic delay (which his EI SLP was even surprised he got since she didn't think his artic was poor enough to warrant continued services). Apraxia is off the table and his SLP predicts this will be his last year of speech therapy with how quickly he's progressing.
