probably a stupid q re: ID vs frat

I feel like I should know the answer to this.
My boys are 6w today and we're still writing an x on Max's hand to tell them apart. They were di/di, but the only difference we've seen is that Miles' nose is more upturned. I know babies really all look similar at this age, so...with ID twins, what physical traits other than DNA have to be ID? I'm not sure what should point us in the direction of testing, you know?

Re: probably a stupid q re: ID vs frat

  • Mine looked different (different hair color, different features, different body types) and sounded completely different from the moment they were born. If you are having trouble telling them apart, I would consider testing.

  • My ID twins have the same lips, nose, eye shape, ear shape and hair color. Their eye color will be the same once they change too. Their ears are different sizes and D's nose is longer than J's. D has more hair than J too.

  • With mine, someone said to compare features. Ears, especially, for some reason. But look at their chins, eye shape, noses, mouth shape, dimples, fingers and toes...individually. Looking at each baby as a whole can be less accurate because things like head shape and weight and length aren't necessarily genetic.

  • Pretty much everything PP mentioned.  Hair color, eye color, shape of lips and ears.  My boys are ID but were very easy to tell apart as newborns because of very different head shape and a big weight discrepancy.  Now they look much more alike.

  • My boys were di/di and my OB told us they were most likely fraternal. They look a lot a like though and were both the same rare blood type (3% of population has it). Someone on this board recommended proactive genetics to me and I did the cheek swabs on the babies- sure enough $100 later, I found out they are identical. It's sooooo nice to finally have an answer... now if I can only get people other than DH and me to tell them apart ;)

    This.

  • We are getting ready to test ours.  Over time they have looked more and more alike.  When their teeth started coming in exactly the same or mirrored image each other (all 8 have) I asked our pedi, he even thinks they are identical.  It's hard as mom because of course I see their differences so I question it, but everyone else just assumes they are identical!  So it is time to test!

  • Not much help but if it makes you feel any better, my ID twins are still so identical we have one of their toes painted, they are 8 1/2 months. :)  I don't see that ending any time soon, the one may go to college with blue toe nails!

Mine too. They've always been almost the exact same weight (to this day, never more than 6 oz. difference), but when they were newborns, one had a flat head and longer hair in the front. Everyone had trouble telling them apart when they had a hat on though. As they got older and their new hair came in, it was eactly the same. Same color, same curls, and of course, everything else mentioned above.

I would have them tested if you're having trouble telling them apart (that is, if you really just have to know!). Mine were di/di too and we did the test through Proactive Genetics when they were 13 months old.

  • Mine are ID but we could tell them apart from day 1. It's only certain angles where we think they look alike but everyone except H's immediate family and my mom and sister can't tell them apart. We had testing done and they're ID - just an FYI, it was only about $100.

  • Do you know their blood types?  That would be another indicator.

I would wait until they are older and see if they continue to look the same.  My girls are ID, but don't look alike, so I always laugh a little at this question because looks alone do not indicate ID.  I know many friends who can line up all of their children's newborn pictures (girls and boys) and because they are siblings they all look alike.  At that age, they just do.
