Congestion (XP to 0-3 Months)

LO has developed some chest and/or nasal congestion. It doesn't happen all the time, but sometimes when he breathes it makes the sound similar to what an adult would make if they had phlegm stuck in their throat and were trying to breathe (kind of like a wet rattling). It doesn't seem to especially bother him but it kind of freaks me out because it sounds so horrible. He coughs and sneezes occasionally, but not frequently enough for me to worry about that specifically (a few times a day, maybe). No fevers, he's eating fine, doesn't seem more irritated than usual, and he breathes fine when he's asleep (no snoring or wheezing, and he has slept elevated since he was about 4 days old because he'd scream bloody murder if we laid him flat). I've started running the humidifier. Any other suggestions? Is it concerning enough to take him to the pedi and get him checked out? Thanks in advance!

  • We brought up similar issues to the pediatrician yesterday and he said it was probably some reflux, which is common. My lo is 4.5 weeks. He suggested exactly what you are already doing: slightly elevating his head while he sleeps and a humidifier.

  • I think all newborns are a little stuffy. You could probably call your doctor and ask a nurse about it. For congestion that is cold related you can use saline nose drops, sit in a closed bathroom with the shower running at its hottest for the steam, it will help loosen things up. Of course, the elevstion and humidifier too.

  • All sounds very normal and not concerning.  I'd use saline nose drops and the Nosefrida snot sucker in addition to the humidifier.

This is exactly what the nurse at our pedi office told me when I called today since LO is experiencing a stuffy nose and trouble breathing because of it. I was told as long is there is no fever and cough then to not bring her in b/c they don't want to expose her to other germs.

We have been using the saline nose drops and humidifier today. She is already doing so much better just from that.

  • My lo has the same exact thing, the doctor diagnosed her with Tracheomalacia. This is when the cartiledge of the babys throat is weak and floppy, and they make lots of noises that sound like they are congested. As thet get older it goes away but is worse during feeding and crying. It doesnt seem to bother her at all but makes me nervou about her breathing, but the dr said she is fine!

  • I just emailed our pedi about this today. DS3 has been really "snorty", but he eats well and it's not constant. She said that babies naturally make more mucous around now he's just shy of 6 weeks and it should go away as his nose matures and he gets better at clearing the mucous on his own. She suggested the humidifier, nose sucker, saline, etc., in the meantime.

  • We have used the bulb syringe to pull out snot and you can also use saline spray as previous posters mentioned. If your LO spits up a lot, best time to do this is before you feed.

Don't use the spray yet, as it's not recommended until 6 months or so. You want the saline DROPS!

We also use the Vicks plug ins in our bedroom to help w/sleeping.

  • Sorry I meant to say saline drops. The drops are recommended for all ages.
