What food would you serve?

LO's 1st birthday party is at 2pm on a Saturday. I partially planned it at 2 because I don't want to have to spend a mint on food, but DH has grander ideas for what kind of spread we need to provide than I do.

So, what would you serve at a party (30 people) if you were on a budget but didn't want to horribly disappoint your guests? :)

Are you a Costco, BJ's or Sam's Club member?  We got some big tubs of salsa, guacamole, hummus and spinach dip there and also got a few family size bags of Tostitos scoops to serve with it.  That would be good enough for appetizers for 30 I would think.  Then you could get a few 2 foot long hoagies and cut them up yourself and serve them on a platter.

I agree with this.  You can do a salad and pasta salad as well in case people need a little extra.  They usually have fruit trays at those places as well.

  • We are doing ours mid afternoon for the same reason.  I am just doing dips and chips, a few snacky things and then cupcakes.  I'm not doing a meal - since it's not a meal time.
  • Same idea here.  A meal just seemed like tooooo much effort.  And we only have seating at a table for 10.  It would just not work out well.

I am so at a loss for food ideas.  Veggie and fruit trays for sure (precut, I am being so lazy and have saved money from the grocery budget for this).  I don't want to do anything I have to keep hot, but think we will do a 7 layer dip.  I wish I had a costco membership!  I might just bite the bullet and buy that stuff in smaller containers at twice the price from Target.  Somehow I feel like I am so slacking though.  TBH, I am not even excited about baking - it just all seems like soooo much work this time around.  UGH.  (sorry to go on whining!)

  • I would make long sandwiches and a pot of soup for people who do come hungry. Then all finger food from there. Chips and dip, veggies, cheese crackers, those are always a big hit.

  • We are doing our party at 1 pm on a Saturday. There will be chips/pretzels out as snack. We are getting a hero sandwich in the shape of a number one and I will make a try of baked ziti super easy and cheap my mom and mil have offered to make something so I may ask one of them to make a salad. That's it, low budget and not too crazy.

  • L's party is today at 3:30.  I am having gold fish, chips and dip, puffs for the babies, a fruit bowl, a veg tray, and cake/cupcakes.  It wasn't as inexpensive as I had hoped, but overall it was much less than serving an actual meal!
