Any babies here with speech delays?

My son who will be 18months in a week has yet to say a word. Its like he still babbles a lot and will sometimes repeat simple sounds like "dun dun dun" or "bababa" but he never calls for anything with a particular sound. We read to him and always call things by name or say what we are doing at the moment

I am planning on doing speech therapy beginning next month. Are any of ya'll's babies also having speech delays? Are you considering therapy? or maybe some other methods?

  • My LO only says hot, uh oh, mama, and yeah!

Im not concerned. He comprehends everything he's just a late talker. So was his brother. I took Dylan for a hearing test and he has fluid in his left ear.

i signed him up for speech therapy. He's on the waiting list and will probably be called in a few months.

i wouldn't worry about it too much, but speech therapy couldn't hurt. Also, get your LO's ears checked. Maybe he also has fluid. My first had fluid as well and as soon as that cleared he started talking up a storm :)

  • Yeah, apparently we are having some here. DD says about 5 or 6 words, and the pedi did not like that at our visit today. She understands a lot and can follow instructions, but the pedi said that if we did not see a drastic improvement in 3 months she was recommending speech therapy. I am not as concerned since I know she is understanding us, but we will do the speech if it is necessary.
  • We still only have mama and dada. Nothing else. Ge understands everything and follows directions, but no words. Tons of babbling that sounds like words, but nothing consistent. We have a 20 month pedi visit (not 18 month), but I may call and request an EI evaluation just for peace of mind. I am not really that concerned, but I also want to be proactive if he does need sone intervention. I would rather let the experts decide.

  • My DD really doesn't talk much.  She understand a ton of things, so i'm not worried either.

She was a super early walker (8 MO 3 days), but she's a late talker. It all works out at the end.

Her cousin, who is 4 months older that her wasn'tsaying anything at her age and now he is talking pretty good!

So no worries, here.  Early walker but a late talker!

  • We just saw the pedi today for Cam's 18 month appointment.  He just said mama a few weeks ago, and says hi and yeah.  He's working on bus but it sounds more like buh right now.

The pedi said if his comprehension is good, which is it, they're not concerned at all.

  • William is behind, he didnt catch up with things the way the Drs were expecting when he got the tubes in his ears. We got him accepted into early intervention for his speech delay & a few other issues. Its made huge improvements for him. Totally worth it. Im hopeful he'll catch up to where he should be soon!

  • We're monitoring Nick's with EI. He has about 10 words, but really only says Hi Bye Mommy Daddy. Tim started speech around 18 months

  • Emme is in speech therapy. She understands really well but her expressive language was that of an 8 month old. She is making leaps while in ST. I'm really glad my pedi referred us when I brought it up as an issue at her 18 month appt.

  • Thanks for all the replies!

I have taken my son to get his ears checked and he passed everything well and she saw no fluid in his ears. The only reason why I am concerned was because at my son's 15 month check up, his old doctor told us that if by 18 months he was not talking, that the would test for autism.. That's what worried me the most. I know kids develop differently, and he has a cousing who started talking a little past 2 as well, but it just worries me

He understands a bit, probably not as much as most of ya'll's kids, but he is mostly babbling. No words. He doesn't make hand gestures either to let us know what he wants, or even to say hi or bye....

I guess just being a FTM and not having any other kids for him to play with, it's expected?

  • My 18 month old doesnt say any words, not even mama or dada.  I was just waiting patiently for him to be ready up until now but I decided to refer him to speech therapy.  I'm just waiting for them to call and set something up, I dont know how long it takes.

  • I knew a kid who didn't talk at all until like four years. And he is now making progress. I know that's an extreme case, but everyone's different. It all levels off in the end :

I wouldn't say "it all levels off in the end"... There are definitely some people who are more verbal than others. I agree with M&M, leave it to the professionals. Having an evaluation, or even going to therapy, won't hurt.

  • DD is in speech therapy, 2x/month

at her eval in dec, her receptive language was at a 17m level but her expressive was at a 7m level. No words, just babbles.

Im not seeing the therapist do anything with her that we weren't doing already, but at this point, I figure, why not. It's free (through the EI state program), and it doesn't hurt anything.

Since her receptive/understanding is spit on, I don't think it's indicative of a bigger issue. Rather, I just think she's a late communicator.
