June 2012 Moms

Probably a silly question from a June 2013 mom :)

Hi June 2012 moms!  I lurk over hear to get an idea of "where will my baby be in a year," but I'm coming out of lurking to ask a question.  Since your babies were all around 6 months at the beginning of winter, what sizes did you buy for winter outerwear?  I'm particularly thinking things like stroller buntings, etc.

Do you i just go ahead and get 6-9 month or are they going to drown in that during November/December? We live in Wisconsin, and among other things walk to our synagogue on Fridays and Saturdays, so I know I'll need some good options and things are on mega-clearance right now!

I hope you don't mind my lurking. Smile

Re: Probably a silly question from a June 2013 mom :)

  • Hi- are there really different size stroller buntings?  If so, I missed that one and just bought whatever!  My June baby now wears 9 months or 6-9 (in some brands, in others it's too small) and 6-12.  At the beginning of winter I think she was wearing 3-6, and by December those were definitely too small.  Just like adults clothes, the sizes and fit really vary by brand.

Most items are fine big, so you could get 6-9 and just roll the pants or whatever.  But, pajamas are not okay big, nor are sleep sacks.  So those items you may just have to buy as you go, making sure the fit is right.

     Hope that helps!

  • DS wears 12 month or 18 month but we are moving to all 18 month now and feel that 24 is right around the corner. He has one coat that is 12 month and one that is 18 month and they both fit about the same (different brands) Really it depends on your baby - how big they are. I didn't think I would have a chunky baby but DS is, my daughter was not and she was true to size for age 6 months old in 6 months clothes etc.

What I have come to love is Carters - as long as the tags are on and you have a receipt you can return a year or so after purchase. I think some other stores are like that too.

  • Hi! Congrats on your upcoming bundle :)

My DS currently is wearing 12-18 months  clothing. I'd say around November he was wearing 9-12 months, but he quickly sprouted right through those clothes.

     Good luck!!

  • Congrats! I cant believe we were in your shoes a year ago!

I would hold off on buying clothes and such because you really have no idea what size your LO will be, especially in a year. My almost 8 month old is still in 3-6 mo clothes, while others younger than her are in 12+ clothes.

I dont have any advice on the stroller bag since Im in FL, but for clothes definitely dont get seasonal stuff until closer to the date.

  • If you are going to buy now stick with carters and kohl?s both will let you return with receipt.  My daughter was small so she was wearing 3 months at 6 months my son is true to size he is currently wearing carters 9 months and other items 6 to 9.  Six month tops still fit.  Personally I would just hold off.  Between his baptism and Christmas he was good to go on clothes I ended up returning most of what I purchased for him.  Plus you can hit the end of winter sales this time next year and actually know your LO's size.

  • I would say its hard because they all grow at different rates.. My LO is over 7 months and wearing 9 months.. Probably in next month or so be up till 12 months. I did have  hard time buying winter clothes because I waited longer to see what X-mas presents she got for clothes. When I went longing for long sleeve ones it was slim pickings.

  • I would buy some essentials, but don't go crazy. We bought 3 to 6 month things for winter, in the fall. A one piece fleece suit and a jacket. Seeing how DS grew in the summer months I felt like I could predict his size for the winter.

DS was only 6lbs 13oz at birth and he is 16lbs at 7 months and still wears 3 to 6 months clothes. I tried a 6 months shirt on him a few days ago and he is drowning in it. So it'll really depend on your LO's size. You'll also find brands that fit your LO really one and some that don't. I like Carter's right now, but DS is small.

Maybe buy things like long sleeve onesies and sleepers in all sizes, but I wouldn't get too season specific. Plus, some things you think are cute or whatever are really not practical baby wear. A lot of zip up sweaters are way too bulky for DS to actually crawl around in. Same with jeans and heavy pants. He is pretty much exclusively in cotton clothes. You kind of need to see what works for you guys!

  • DD was in 6m clothing by 4months old b/c she was so long.  She's now in 9m Carter's and 6-12m Old Navy.

  • We live in MN, so we bought 2 snowsuits: one in 6-9 and one in 9 months size. They cannot wear it in the car seat, so it was basically a waste of money.

LO is wearing 9 months (Carters) and 9-12 mo for Children's Place (they run way small).

Get onesies and layering pieces b/c those you will need regardless of the weather. Oh, and footed PJ's.

  • Thanks so much, ladies!  Those of you saying to hold off are probably right... I need to remind myself not to get too excited and purchase everything!  Smile  If I get any clearly wintry items, it sounds like I should definitely err on the large size for outerwear.

Your babies are all SO BIG and SO DARLING!  Can't believe it'll be us next year.  Thanks again!

  • We also live in WI and dressing baby for this bitter cold that is going on now sucks! I try and keep her inside as much as possible in this cold. She fits in both 6 and 9 month stuff. For a snow suit she wears 6 months, her 9 month one is HUGE on her. I know you aren't supposed to wear the snowsuit in the car but we asked our pedi about it and he said when the windchill is -20 it's just as dangerous to not have baby in a snowsuit as it is to have her in one in the car seat so we do it. I try my hardest not to leave the house though when it is like that. The last few days have sucked and we had one quick trip to target!

  • Keep in mind that if you're using an infant car seat and will be carrying baby around in that in between car trips, you should not dress baby in anything heavier than lightweight fleece. If baby is not being transported in the car (like when you walk to synagogue) that doesn't apply and heavier clothing would be fine.

I would hold off on buying clothes until you have a better idea of how quickly your baby grows and what size you'll need at that time. When pregnant I was convinced that DS was going to be a chunky baby b/c my husband was, but baby has turned out to be on the small side - 20th percentile for weight at his six month checkup and 16th percentile for height. He has been wearing 6 to 9 month clothes for a while but the pants tend to be a bit long. My nephew is 10 weeks younger than DS and I swear they're about the same size. So you just never know.

  • Its really going to depend on your baby. My baby was born June 1st, so he's one of the oldest in the group, but he's also one of the smallest. He will be 8 months in just a few days and he's still wearing 3-6 month clothes. So our heavier winter stuff is all 3-6, and we have mostly springy stuff for 6-9

  • You may not be using an infant car seat. My lo HATED her infant car seat and would scream every time she went it in. We just bought a Britax convertible car seat so we have to take her in and out where ever we go. She is much happier though!

  • I would hold off. Every brand and every kid is different, like all the PP said. And I have bought almost no clothes for DD. The grandmas cant help themselves and she is getting new stuff each week and I am so glad I didn't go nuts. As for a stroller bunting I say go big. Maybe you will get 2 years out of it, or at least a fall, winter, early spring.

My DD is so thin and long she can wear 3-6 on top but some 6-12 bottoms fit like flood pants. And baby jeans are useless!

  • I would pick up things like snowsuits soon - as they go on sale so cheap, you'll likely be able to buy 2 for less than the price of one if you wait until next fall!  Assuming neither of you are super big, or super small, you can probably guess (you may be wrong, but then you could donate the suit somewhere for someone in need)?  So if you want, buy both 3-6 and 6-12 (at least for all 3 of my kids, bigger is always necessary for outerwear due to them being so long). .

  • I agree on holding off. I had no idea how quickly she would grow out of things. You really can't predict what size your baby will be at what age. It depends on the baby! If you see an awesome deal on something it's okay to go for it, but definitely don't go too crazy. Not buying so much in advance is something I wish I did. (Trust me, I know how hard it is!)

  • It all depends on the baby.  DS1 wore 3-6 months until he was like 9 months old, so the bigger size would have been way too much.  Ds2 is a porker and wears 6-9 and 9-12 already.

Look into stroller blankets, they don't need to be sized.

    We have one like this

To my boys:  I will love you for you Not for what you have done or what you will become I will love you for you I will give you the love The love that you never knew
  • I would be careful personally and buy stuff later you might get a porker like I have lol. He is in 18-24 and some 2T. He wore his Christmas clothes camping in July. Another thing to consider is that DS got so big so fast he outgrew his infant seat at 4 months meaning we couldn't even use the bunting I bought either.
