Stomach virus question

For those who's LOs have had the stomach virus, how long did it last? Abby woke up last Friday night throwing up. That ended after about two hours but has had diarrhea every day since then. I called the pedi yesterday and they said I just have to let it run its course. But how long is too long? Otherwise, she is doing okay. Cranky and clingy but she drinks all her bottles, drinks water in between, eatting a mostly BRAT diet. We've tried Pedialyte but she refuses to drink it. I just realized that I've been giving her a normal dinner at nights and those nights had major blowouts in the middle of the night. I'm going to adjust her dinner tonight to see if that helps. Any suggestions of anything else to try? I just want my little girl to feel better.

Re: Stomach virus question

  • When my LO had diarrhea when she was younger I had to give her pedialyte and she would only drink the Orange fruit flavored one. She hated the other flavors. Maybe try another flavor?

  • Very acidic diarrhea for 8 days! In those 8 days, he threw up 3 or 4 times. If she's eating and wanting her bottles, that's great! Ian didn't want food at all, but he would still take his bottles most days. My ped's office, after I finally called them, said nothing but pedialtye for at least 24 hours. After that offer his bottle, but no food for at least 24 hours. After that, BRAT for 24 hours. I did this and he was better after the 4th day. Was it coincidental? I have no idea. Did this regimen help him get better? I have no idea. I suggest laying off the food if you can, give her tummy a little rest even if you're doing BRAT. The key is keeping her hydrated and if she's having at least 3 wet diapers a day, according to my ped, then she's hydrated. I hope she feels better soon. I know it's rough!

  • We are just recovering from this.  It was awful, so I can totally commiserate!!!  Basically it lasted almost 2 weeks for us.  It started slowly (just refusing bottles), and then a couple days later she threw up.  It was random though.  She probably threw up 4-5 times in about as many days.  She also had diarrhea for most of the time.

When we called the ped, he said it could take 2 weeks!!!  And that's basically what it took.  I couldn't believe how long it took, but she is finally on the mend.  We just tried to let her be the guide.  Stuck with mostly a BRAT diet (although she wasn't eating much) and offered her her bottles.  Some she took, some she didn't.

Hang in there.  I thought it would never end, but it finally did.
