For those who have potty trained boys - a question

Does he pee standing or sitting?

N has shown some interest in the potty over the last month or so and although I don't feel like he's anywhere close to actual potty training, I'll take him to the bathroom when he wants to go.  For the first week or two he would sit for a bit, play with the toilet paper and then want down so he could flush.  Now he doesn't want to sit but will stand in front of the toilet with his hands in front just like daddy and just grin at us.  He doesn't necessarily hold his penis, his hands just sort of hover there.

So I'm wondering when we do really start potty training should we teach him to go standing up or have him sit?

  • From my experience they all sit at first. Eventually he wanted to do it like Dh.
  • Loading the player...
  • He sits on his little frog potty.

We have a potty ring for the big toilet, but he won't use it.

  • both my boys learned standing up.  it really worked well for us.  I would have them stand on a step stool or my feet and then I would would push their butts toward the toilet just a bit and make sure the penis is pointing at the toilet.
  • DS is too squirmy to do standing for now. The first few days he did a lot of sitting and trying and waiting. I wouldn't want to have experienced that with him standing.

  • Thanks for the input!  And good points about the squiminess, wait times and pooping :)

  • I'm nowhere near having a fully trained boy, but he sits. And I stopped using the potty seat (the one that fits on top of the toilet). He just spread eagles it and goes pee. The potty seat just distracted him. Now he likes to repeat "don't fall in!".

DH says that DS can pee standing at a urinal or outside... "I don't want a kid peeing all over our bathroom!". His words.

  • So *I* potty trained buddy sitting down. It was awesome not a lot of messes either.

THEN DH decided to teach him to pee standing up. Now I have to clean pee off the back of the toilet, off the stool, off the walls, off my feet. Teach him to pee sitting until he is socially mature enough not to pee on you

  • They both started by sitting, then 'graduated' to standing.

DS2 had a poo regression right around the time he started standing to pee, as though he just didn't want to sit on the potty at all.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Mine both PTed at 2.5 years.   They both sat first but within a month were standing. DS2 learned this quicker because of his older brother.

  • We did this progression with both boys. First, they started by sitting on a potty. Then once they got the hang of knowing the signs of when they needed to pee, we moved on to sitting on the toilet. Then we finally moved to standing at the toilet. Standing can be messy at first if they don't pay attention because it seems like their pee can flow in different directions each time! We only moved on to that once everything else about PTing was completely learned. We did the 3dayPT method for both so having potties in several rooms worked well for the first week.
  • Ds has been PT for 7 months and still pees sitting down. I don't want to clean poo off the floor since he pees/poos at the same time. Eventually I'm sure he will need to learn, but I don't see why now. It's a lot less messy when they sit.

  • We started training the day after Christmas.

We gave him the choice, especially if he didnt really wanna go. like 'do you want to sit or stand?'

He stands on a stool or a just hold him up...it's good practice for when we go out in public. Not only do I not want him sitting on a nasty toilet (and grabbing all over it-yuck), but I'm also not stripping off his pants and shoes for a quick pee.

  • My boys both stood. I think it interested them more and they were both PTed early.

  • Mine has been PT for over a year and still sits.  He is just beginning to try and stand but his issues with messy hands hold him back--he freaks when he gets pee on his hands!

  • Oliver usually sits.  Sometimes he wants to stand, so I let him.  Standing full time comes later when they get a little taller.  Right now if he wants to stand he has to use a step stool.

  • Sitting.  A week later, he TAUGHT HIMSELF how to do it standing during naptime.  YAY!

So, then I taught him how to aim for the toilet and clean up if he misses.

Preschool expected him to know how to use a urinal.
