Homemade items

Inspired by UO Thursday.

Do you make anything you used to buy ready made? Share recipes if you'd like. I make my own laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, and I just recently made body wash.

Re: Homemade items

  • I made CD detergent, but it was a fail.  Well, not entirely.  It worked at first, but apparently not well enough and we ended up with ammonia build-up that caused ammonia burns on Lily's diaper area.  Sad  The recipe is good, our water is just too hard for it to work long-term.  If anyone in an area with softer water wants the recipe, I'm happy to share. (It can also be used for clothes if you just add one ingredient.)

Missy, how's the body wash working out?

I make my own shampoo/conditioner, lotion, make up remover, mascara, blush,  powder, foundation, eyeliner, face masks, detergent and hair mask.

Recipes, please?  I want to be more crunchy, too!  Wink  I'm too lazy for make-up, though.  I rarely wear it, so it's not worth making my own.

  • You can buy 8 oz bar soap of your choice. 2 tbsp of glycerin, which is in the band aid area of pharmacy, and a gallon of water.

Grate or finely chop soap. Mix all ingredients on stove top and heat until melted. Take off stove and let it set for 8 to 10 hours.

My batch turned out runny, so I'm going to experient further to thicken it. It still washes fine though.

I keep meaning to try a ball of tinfoil in the dryer as a static reducer...anyone do this?

I tried it and it worked pretty well.  Then my mom told me that there's a lot of research linking tinfoil to Alzheimer's (she works with the Alzheimer's society).  That prompted me to buy wool dryer balls for me, her and MIL.

    LOL  Big Smile

I make my own shampoo/conditioner, lotion, make up remover, mascara, blush,  powder, foundation, eyeliner, face masks, detergent and hair mask. Granted a lot of it is coconut oil, but I don't purchase them all separate anymore.

    Loving the thread.

I think you just need to share all of these Papps.

I use the same shampoo as papps. I make most of my household cleaners but it's basically just vinegar and baking soda, sometimes natural lemon juice.

I do my own laundry detergent too but in liquid form. I use 3tbsp of Borax, washing soda, and 7th generation dish soap and about 2 or so tbsp of vinegar. I use old All free and clear jugs and mix with very hot water. I let it dissolve and settle and then fill the rest with water. It's so cheap and smells delicious!

  • I made my own laundry detergent once, but I was not happy with how clean my clothes were, especially DH's clothes.
  • Ive gotten much crunchier in the past year too. I was making my own laundry detergent with borax, washing soda, and fels naphtha, but it irritated DS's skin. I switched to Charlie's soap which works better for us. I still make my own cleaning solutions made up of vinegar, water, a bit of mrs meyers soap, and tea tree oil. I use vinegar in the fabric softener spot of the washing machine, and as a dishwasher rinse aid. I made my own wool dryer balls too, which I love and were a fraction of the cost of buying them already made. I make my own carpet powder with baking soda, borax, and essential oils too. I use coconut oil as a makeup remover.

I also make wipes using a Viva paper towel roll cut in half. Boil and allow 2 cups of water to cool. Add a Tbsp of coconut oil and 2 Tbsp of baby wash. Poor mix over Viva roll in air tight container. Tip container upside down for 5 to 10 minutes and then tip right aide up.

  • The wipes work great! And smell better. They've never dried in the container I use. I still keep some natural Huggies wipes on hand, though for big messes.

What container do you put it in? I read people use a tupperware container?

It's a container I bought from Walmart. It's one of those that's handle serves to vaccum seal the lid.

How do you make them?  I just bought a bunch when they were on sale on ecobabybuys.  But they sell them in groups of 4 and then tell you that 6 is the optimal number to use.  Grrr.

  • I used this tutorial. Hopefully the link works from my ipad.

I had a 50% off coupon to Michaels and got a large skein of yarn for $7. I was able to get six balls out of it with a little yarn left over.

I think I saw this on pinterest and wanted to make them. Was it difficult to make or totally worth it?

My crunchy ass loves this thread! Thanks for posting it missy :)

they were definitely easy to make just a little tedious. I was able to make them in a day and a half. It looks like they'll last a really long time, so I think it was worth it.

    You're welcome ;
I've discovered a lot of the stuff I've attempted to make take a little experimenting, so it's nice to see what works for everyone else.

  • I just make our own Windex from ammonium and water. Embarrassed

image"width="200px"> Lilypie Second Birthday tickers Image and video hosting by TinyPic
  • We make our own wrinkle release formula, it is not a crunchy recipe though, but it gets my wrinkles out of the clothesStick out tongue

I bake a lot from scratch, I also clean a lot with vinegar, but that is about it.

ETA: Water and vinegar in the carpet cleaning machines works great and you don't have to spend $15.00 on a jug.

I also want to know how you make your make up, especially mascara. I have my eye issue, so it would benefit me to use more natural products around my eyes.
