Avery for a boy?

Boy name or girl name? I know several girl Averys, but I kind of like it for a boy. Anybody know any boy Averys? Or is it too feminine?

Re: Avery for a boy?

  • I only know girl Avery's and didn't even know it was a boys name until recently, so for me it's definitely too feminine.

  • I know an older man named Avery, but everyone younger I have met with the name is a girl.

I think the girls have taken it over.

  • It's originally a boys name but has become popular for girls. It's this generation's Ashley, Kelly, etc.

I'll always see it as a boy name.

  • I always think boy first, probably cause a friend has a 6 yr old son named Avery and that was my first association with the name.

  • I think this one is still fine on a boy. It's ranked somewhere around 200 I believe so even though it's not as popular as it is on girls, it's hardly exclusively female. I like it.

  • Even though Avery was originally a boy's name, I think it has been taken over by the girls.  It just sounds super feminine to me.

  • It's one of my favorite names for a girl. While it might be ranked in the 200s for boys, it's ranked in the top 20 for girls, which means there is a good chance of him sharing his name with mostly girls throughout school. Whether I loved the name or not, I wouldn't do that to my son.
  • I had never met or heard of a girl named Avery until a few years ago, but knew men and younger boys (still do) named Avery. I can tell you I was surprised when a little Avery showed up and I was expecting a boy at our soccer game (coed u8). Ive met a few since then, I still prefer it on a boy. Right now it's like Taylor, you'll hear lots of either m/f with it.

    Yup.

I went to school with a guy whose middle name is Avery. He's 31. Other than that, the only other male I've ever come across with this name is Murphy Brown's son (yes, from the show that dates back to the 80s and 90s)...and that's not IRL.

However, I know at least two or three female Averys and all are under the age of 6.

  • The only Avery I know is a teenage boy, and I have always thought of it as a boy name because of Charlotte's Web.  I wish more people would use it as a boy name.

  • I posted the vice versa of this question, and a lot of people said it was for a boy, but I personally think it is very feminine. It reminds me a bit of an aviary (a bird sanctuary), so maybe that's why it is more feminine to me.
