3rd Trimester

Freak out moment!

I went for the Gestational Diabetes test last Saturday and my doctor called me today saying I didn't pass.  Their cut off is 130 and mine was 148.  And I now have to sit for the three hour test.  Has anyone had to do this and the three hour test come back fine?  I just need to know that there is hope lol.  I have never had an issue with high blood sugar before but the doctor said during pregnancy that doesn't matter.  Thoughts/experiences please!

Re: Freak out moment!

  • My first test came back good, but I wouldn't worry too much! I have heard of TONS of people having a normal 3 hour, it just sucks :(

  • My first test was bad, but I passed the 3 hour with flying colors. Be sure to take something to work on or a good book to read. I worked on a scrapbook for my first little boy, before the next one arrives. Good luck!

  • I know people are always just looking for hope but I don't ever understand this question "Has anyone ever failed the 1 hour and then passed the 3 hour?"  Obviously the answer is yes or else there would be no point in DOING the 3 hour test if a failed 1 hour guaranteed you a failed 3 hour, kwim?

Seriously - read the board a little before posting. There's a post called gestational diabetes towards the bottom of the page. It asks the exact same thing.

So she needs to go through every single damn post before posting something? This is obviously something that is really bothering her.

wow im happy my pregnancy hormones are not getting to me as much as yours are to you. im sure in your 700 posts you have repeated something as well.

OP: i basically failed with the same numbers and passed the 3 hr with flying colors! the 1 hr is somewhat of a flawed test so i wouldnt stress too much about it. its annoying to take, but im sure you are fine.

  • Nope.  It's never been done before!

J/K.  Happens all of the time.  Don't worry yet.

  • Yes.  I failed with 135 and passed the 3 hr.  Your one hour results are pretty low, so I'd say there's a very good chance you'll pass the 3 hr.

  • It happen to me. I didn't pass the first one and the 3 hour test came back fine. Try to relax, I remember stressing over it and thinking I did something wrong. When you go, make sure you take something to read, it is a long wait. Also take a snack to eat after your done with the test, you will come out of their hungry. I didn't take any snacks and ended up running to the first place I can buy food. Good Luck!

  • I thought these boards were a community to help each other out. We don't all have the time to read every single post, at least I know I don't. I'm a newbie here, but I signed up to read what other women in my  situation are going through and try to relate to them.

  • The same thing happened to me, and I took the 3 hour test and all my numbers came back just fine.  Please keep in mind that stress can raise those scores.  Do a lot of deep breathing and try and relax.  Believe me, I know it's hard.  I did lots of crying because I wouldn't be able to have the birth I wanted with GD, so I was pretty freaked out. I've also read tons of info on the subject and if you do have it, there is a lot of support and you can still have the experience you want.  You may have to change your ob/midwife to do so.  Knowledge is power!  The best of luck to you!

God forbid anyone ask a question that has already been asked without getting reprimanded!

  • I failed my one hour with with 166 and passed my 3 hours with no problem...I know it's hard not to but don't worry yet!
  • I failed my one hour and passed the 3 hour. I hear it's common, because you drink that sugary drink and your blood sugar doesn't have enough time to come back down. I also fasted for 12 hours before the 3 hour one.

I just did this in December. My 1 hr test was a miserable failure. My doctor said passing was 140 and I was a 184. Diabetes runs in my family (4 generations) so they told me with numbers that high I didn't even need to bother with the 3 hr if I didn't want to. Well, a 2nd opinion is always better than just trusting the 1st, so I sat for the exam anyway.

I aced it with extremely low numbers. My fasting blood level (before drinking liquid) was a 99 and all three test hours never went above 120. So I wouldn't worry about it.

And even if you do fail the 3 hour test, it doesn't mean that you or the baby will have diabetes after birth. You'll just have to watch what you eat and at what times you eat it. Good Luck to you.
