Concerts?

My husband and I are both big music buffs. We really enjoy listening to live music. Of course, we haven't been able to catch many live shows since Anja has been born. This spring we are wanting to maybe fly to CA and attend Coachella. The husband has an aunt who lives in Palm Springs, which is very close to where the actual festival is. She will watch Anja for the majority of the time while we're away, however I want to bring her to a couple of the shows. She loves crowds and loud noises. Because it's outdoors, we'll be able to escape some of the crowds by hanging out in the back. We'll also probably bring headphones just in case. Of course, I'm a first timer here, and I don't know if this a completely whacko idea. Have any of you brought your babies to any sort of large event? Do you plan on it? There's a couple of free outdoor concerts at the casinos, which is about a five minute drive from our house, this summer too. They'll definitely be tame events, and I think she'll enjoy those a lot.

Re: Concerts?

  • DH is a musician in a loud band. I haven't brought DS to any shows because they're all past bedtime, but I bring him to their practices a couple times a month. I wouldn't be opposed to taking him to an outdoor event, either. I was going to when DS was 2 months, but DH wasn't playing until 8pm, so it was too late to be worth it.

I bought DS Em's Baby Banz ear muffs when he was a month old. He has no problem wearing them for hours. He's even fallen asleep with them on.

Anyway, I fully anticipate bringing DS to a couple outdoor concerts this summer. If you're whacko so am I.

  • We've brought DS to a few outdoor lakeside concerts this past summer. No big deal since these were kid friendly concerts. Then this fall we brought DS to a few college football games. He did fine as long as I got up a few times during the game to walk around with him in the carrier. And he would eventually just fall asleep.
I've been to coachella before and it's such a big outdoor venue with a lot of people walking around. I wouldn't think it's bad to bring a baby to especially if she enjoys being outdoors. And since you have the earphones for her you can always use that if it gets too loud. Or leave her with your aunt if its too overwhelming for her.
  • I brought lo to the philharmonic in Central Park last year. She was only 1 mo old and it was late so it disturbed her sleep a little but I slung her and walked around and she was fine. I say def go for it!
  • Thank you for sharing your experiences, ladies. I forgot that I had brought my daughter to a professional baseball game this past summer, but she was only about two months, however she did just fine. I think I will bring her to the show this spring.

  • LO has been to a couple Opera's, and 4 symphony performances so far, as well as DH's band's concerts. He handles it really well. He just sits up and listens to the music. I don't know that I would take him to a mainstream concert though..but If you aren't in front of the speakers I doubt it'd be a big deal.

  • We won't go to any where I would expect her to sit for a long time.  That's just setting a toddler up to fail IMO. (holy eff they will be TODDLERS this summer yikes!)  But outdoor festivals - sure!  There are kid concerts at a park near us in the summer so we'll probably go to those.

I'm just hoping she's on the 1 afternoon nap schedule, like DS, by then.  It's really hard to do things now b/c she naps morning and afternoon and he naps midday.  So pretty much from 10-4 someone is napping.

  • I been going to festivals for years and people are always bringing babies, its a family friendly environment. I plan on bringing my LO to vibes this year but its not till July. (they even have family camping if you want)

I say its great to have them out and about and into what you like to do, make sure to attend a couple with just you and the hubby!

  • I think taking your LO sounds fun! Although in my much younger days, I definitely remember going to Phish shows & being werided out that parents brought their kids, especially hanging out in the parking lot pre-show where less-than-family-friendly things were taking place.....

  • My husband is an offroad and drag racer, so we go to plenty of LOUD events.

I purchased some ear muffs for our little one, and he doesn't mind them a bit!
