2 rear facing carseats in one car...HELP

Hi ladies

Hoping you can help....  My husband and I are searching for a convertible carseat and an infant car seat that can fit behind a standard size sedan both rear facing.  Right now Hannah's seat is in the middle, but we can't put it rear facing behind the drivers seat because it's too uncomfortable for the driver.  We have the britax marathon/boulevard.  Any suggestions on a smaller seat length/depth wise.  We would love to keep her rear facing for a least another 6 months.  TIA

  • Can you put the Britax behind the passenger and then an infant bucket behind the driver?

We had a Graco convertible, but it would not fit in my sedan ('07 Nissan Altima).  We returned it and purchased the Britax Marathon because it had a shorter shell.   We still don't put it behind the driver because DH is tall, but it seems to work behind the passenger seat without being cramped at all.

Sorry, that might not be a lot of help....I was under the impression from my research that that because the Britax has a shorter shell, it is a better fit in a smaller car.

  • How tall are you and your H?  If you're short, then you have more options.  If you're both tall, you're likely screwed.

We do have a Cosco Scenera as our spare seat.  It's pretty small.  It's also pretty cheap - $40 at Walmart.  However, it has very little padding and no side impact stuff.  DS likes it though, but I doubt it'd be comfortable for more than a short jaunt. Our other seat is the Graco MyRide 65.  It's HUGE.  Definitely NOT what you're looking for.

Have you tried looking on Amazon and reading reviews?  They often discuss seat size.  Once you narrow it down a bit, you can go to BRU and see if they'll let you install one to see.  If that doesn't work, you can take a tape measure with you and measure your seat space.  Measure the shortest point.  That's what we did when we searched for a new car.

  • Everything I've read about squeezing large families into sedans has all pointed to the Sunshine Radians.  Look into them.

They're expensive-ish, but it's a helluva lot cheaper than having to get a new car.

I'm kinda confused as well.  We drive a Subaru Legacy (I was under the impression this was a standard sedan), and our Britax Boulevard and our Britax Chaperone both fit in there RFing with some squeezing, but overall it was fine.

DH is 6'2" and I am 5'7".  We put the Chaperone behind me because it's even bigger front to back than the Boulevard.

    In any event, good luck!!

  • thanks ladies.  I am 5'7 and DH is 6ft so we do need some leg room.  The issue is that we take some long rides (1.5+hr) to visit family quite frequently and we both need to be comfortable plus it's not safe to have your knees towards your chest in the event of a collision.  We are trying to keep Hannah rear facing, but this turning her may be our best option at this point.

  • I would try googling your car make/model and carseat and see if anything pops up.

  • We also bought the Cosco Scenera as a backup plan when DD1 started DC (she was maybe 13 months?). She's been using it for over 2 years now, and she's never said a single thing about it not being comfortable or anything - even when we go visit my parents, who live 2.5 hours away.

Personally, if you're looking to keep Hannah RF another 6 months, I would try to have Hannah behind the passenger seat, and put the baby behind the driver seat (in my experience, bucket seats take up less room than convertible seats when RF). When the baby is ready to switch to a convertible car seat, Hannah will be FF and you can just have them switch sides.

As far as recommending a carseat, we have the Chicco Keyfit and are very happy with it. I have also read it is one of the smaller ones out there, so it'd probably be worth looking into.
