  So long as you are comfortable sharing the news of your pg, I would talk to him now. You've got 20 weeks to go, which should give them plenty of time to find someone to cover your duties while you are out and time for you to bring that person up to speed. Also, in the event you end up in an unpaid leave situation, you still have some time to work on saving up for that.  At least then you'd know what your options are.

  I tried talking to my boss 3 or 4 months before my due date and he didn't want to think about it yet - it was too remote a deadline at the time.  I think you need to consider your boss - is he the type to want (and have time) to plan ahead, or is he one to wait until there's a looming deadline to want to discuss?  Is your job something that could easily be covered by others, or would he have to hire and train a temp (which takes some time to arrange)?

  Thanks everyone! Our HR doesn't know anything.  We are a really small office (6 full time employees).  I have heard rumors that he wants to hire a temp while I am out (which seems like a lot of training).  I work as a City Planner and its not really just a job that can be easily picked up.  My boss is really passive aggressive so I hope that talking to him early doesn't come back to haunt me.  I know he will gossip about it to others in the office. Very frustrating but his attitude towards employees changes once they have children.  If you have kids you can get away with anything in my office.

  Sheesh.  It's a bummer you have to deal with that. I'm in the camp of talking about it sooner rather than later, but every boss and office environment is different so you have to take that into account when making your decision.  Do they know you're pregnant?

  I would at least ask him if he wants to discuss.  It's sometimes easier to make plans when they've got more lead time.  If I were you, I'd have some sort of plan in mind, though.  If you're a city planner, is there not some kind of city-wide policy?

  Yes everyone knows I am pregnant.  And there is no city policy.  There is little turn over in my office.  I think we will at least have a quick talk about it next week and then I will write up a formal plan.

  Not sure where you live, but I'm also a City Planner. For both of my leaves, we contracted with a firm that provided a temporary planner in my place. I have also worked as a contract planner, and I know that filling in for a period of time is something you kind of get used to in that line of work. PM me if you want to talk about it in more detail.
