Hello,
I am a FTM due in June. When is the right time to talk to your boss about maternity leave? I am only the second person to ever go on maternity leave where I work. Is now too soon? I would love some pros and cons of talking to him sooner rather than later.
Thanks!

Thanks everyone! Our HR doesn't know anything. We are a really small office (6 full time employees). I have heard rumors that he wants to hire a temp while I am out (which seems like a lot of training). I work as a City Planner and its not really just a job that can be easily picked up. My boss is really passive aggressive so I hope that talking to him early doesn't come back to haunt me. I know he will gossip about it to others in the office. Very frustrating but his attitude towards employees changes once they have children. If you have kids you can get away with anything in my office.
Sheesh. It's a bummer you have to deal with that. I'm in the camp of talking about it sooner rather than later, but every boss and office environment is different so you have to take that into account when making your decision. Do they know you're pregnant?
Yes everyone knows I am pregnant. And there is no city policy. There is little turn over in my office. I think we will at least have a quick talk about it next week and then I will write up a formal plan.
Thanks Ladies!
Not sure where you live, but I'm also a City Planner. For both of my leaves, we contracted with a firm that provided a temporary planner in my place. I have also worked as a contract planner, and I know that filling in for a period of time is something you kind of get used to in that line of work. PM me if you want to talk about it in more detail. I'm happy to help!!
