Genetics

So how does genetics really play a part in pregnancy? I'm talking like let's say your mom didn't have morning sickness and had amazing pregnancies...does it work the same way for you or does it not even matter??

If it does play a part I'm glad because my mom said her pregnancies were super easy and so was labor....

Re: Genetics

  • The only one i know of is whether or not you'll get stretch marks is genetic.

Anecdotally, my mom had easy pregnancies with all four of her kids and I had an extremely easy pg with my first. So far though, this time has been more challenging.

  • I'm not sure but all I know is that my mom said she had very easy pregnancies as well as easy labor for both and my first pregnancy was easy and so was my labor!!! However, I guess this pregnancy could be totally different!

  • My mom has easy pregnancies and deliveries and I had a fairly easy pregnancy and very easy delivery.  My sister on the other hand had horrible pregnancies but very easy deliveries...so I don't know lol

  • My mom and I both had very hard pregnancies with our first but my labor was super easy 3 pushes where hers was not so much. With her second it was just as hard and this one has been easier, so I think it doesn't play into it.

  • My mom had great pregnancies and horrible labor. I had a wonderful pregnancy and labor was delightful for me.

  • Genetics isn't an all or nothing type of thing. If your mom had an easy pregnancy, that means you are more likely than the average woman to have an easy pregnancy too, but it doesn't guarantee anything.

You might have inherited some things from your mom, like hormone levels, the potential to release more than one egg at ovulation and thus the chance of having fraternal twins, the way your body responds to pregnancy hormones and thus some pregnancy symptoms, the structure of some of your organs and pelvic bones.

But you also inherited some of that from your dad's side. Your pregnancy experience will be a balance of your mom's genes with your dad's, or rather, paternal grandma's genes, and your environment over the course of your life so far.

Your partner's genes will have some impact too, since they are half of your baby's genes and will affect how baby grows and how that growth affects your pregnancy.

For what it's worth, I haven't had any morning sickness so far at 7 weeks. My mom didn't have it either. Same with my best friend and her mom. But that doesn't mean that's going to be true for every woman and her mom.

  • My mom had very easy pregnancies, very few symptoms and fast labors.

My first pregnancy was easy, but a difficult labor with a ton of complications ending in c/s.

So far this pregnancy has been brutal. Severe morning sickness that has put me in the hospital 2x for fluids and meds. So maybe that means I will have an easy labor?? a girl can hope...

  • My mom did not have m/s with any of the three of us, and so far I haven't either.  Still early yet though.
