Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Did you know: Baby Eczema...

So, we went to the doctor Tuesday afternoon for a chest cold, and the doctor mentioned Kylers eczema... and asked how long it has been going on (Not our regular doctor, she was out for the day).  I told her since around 3 months or so, and we have done SO MUCH for it, but it never really clears up at all.

Well, she said, and I never knew this, so I thought I'd share, that baby eczema is in the same genetic composition as asthma! She said that about 60% of babies that have higher to severe eczema will have childhood asthma!

Crazy how they have nothing to do with each other, but there is a correlation between the two...

Just thought I'd pass it on :)

  • Both are linked to overactive immune system.

  • I actually found that out when I was researching vaccine reactions. My sister and I both have horrible asthma and eczema! When I found out that they were connected I was actually very surprised!

  • I did know that, but only because my sister has bad eczema and bad asthma, and so did DH.

DH has really grown out of his eczema, it's been years since he's had an outbreak anywhere. Same with his asthma. He runs 5k now with no problems. And as a child he was ventilated multple times a month during allergy season! So there's definitely hope that people can outgrow both.

Yeah, I was going to say this.  Eczema, asthma, and allergies are all immune system issues.

FYI: my brother had eczema as a baby and kid but never had an issues with asthma or allergies.

  • has your son seen an allergist?  its not necessarily causal, but there's a high correlation between eczema and allergies.  turns out my daughter has a pretty severe dairy allergy - it took us awhile to figure out because she's breastfed, and i'm lactose intollerant so i don't eat much dairy to begin with.  but the little i was eating was enough to cause her eczema to flare up.  i gave up dairy, including the little bit of lactaid in my morning coffee, and within 2 days her eczema cleared up! she looks like a new baby!

  • Yes! It's also a process known as the allergic march, where baby's eczema can progress to allergies and asthma. The good news is there's some studies that point towards managing eczema well can help to prevent the allergic march - which is why skin care for babies and toddlers with eczema is so important. Don't brush off moisturizer, keep it up even when there's no rashes as dry skin is already more vulnerable to irritants.

For more on the allergic march, see this summary of a doc's published paper

Take care of the skin! and ours too :)
