Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Constipation

Anyone dealt with this? I have never had a constipated kid, but DS just had a rock hard poop with pain. I've given him prunes and a bit of apple juice. Any other recs?

Also, could this be from formula? I'm trying to wean but it hasn't been going very well. He finally started drinking about 4-8oz of formula a day, so not a ton. The only other different thing in his diet is cheerios, which does not seem like a likey culprit.

Re: Constipation

  • my LO got really constipated w/ rice cereal. I am not sure about Cheerios. You can give a bit of water w/ meals. I give prunes mixed / prune juice.

LO needed a glycerin suppository too :/

Hmm, thanks. I'm not even sure I would know when to give him a suppository. Since about 3 months old he only goes every few days, which isn't uncommon for BF'd babies, so I can't go based on time. I guess I will wait a little longer and keep an eye out.

  • Fiber in daily diet does wonders... peaches, pears I give DD daily. She's been ff since 3mns, enfamil gentlease works best for her. Lo's poop will change but shouldn't be constipated from ff

  • I am going through this exact same thing. My DS is 6 months old, and was always a champion pooper. And last week, ugh it was just heart wrenching to see him try to "go". Could be a bunch of things - just started supplementing with formula, just started 2 meals of solids per day, and had just introduced bananas for the first time. Curious which of those was the culprit. He's back to normal now, and what I did - pears...peaches...and tried a little prune juice too. Not sure what did the trick either.

  • Same as PP - DD was a champion world record holder pooper from day one.  We intro bananas last week and it backed up SO bad.  It literally took 4 days of hard little poops to finally get it all out - that was with juice, prunes, even "helping" her with the rectal thermometer (good times).  All in all, it's left me leary of bananas, which of course, she LOVED.  She's now back to pears and prunes.  Her daycare teacher told me anything with a "P" makes them go so for now, I'm sticking to that stuff.

You need to look at the consistency when he does poop. If it is dry and pebbly (sorry), then check with your pedi.

  • Bananas and carrots make LO so constipated. It's sad to see her like that! Usually the half water apple juice does the trick, but recently it got really bad and the one thing that worked was warm baby prunes, then sips of warm water.
  • We are going through that now with our son. We mix prune juice and apple juice together and he gets that every other day. Our doctor also said to try a tsp of karo syrup mixed in 2 oz of water if that doesnt help. Good luck!
  • My daughter has also been getting constipated since starting solids.  I've noticed both apples and bananas seem to back her up, which stinks since many of the baby food mixed versions contain either one.  Prunes usually does the trick for her.

  • same thing - we are transitioning from exclusive breastmilk to 3 bottles of formula a day (i just can't keep up with pumping and work at this point).  THe formula can really cause the baby to be constipated, especially if their system is used to breastmilk, which is so easily digested.  It will take some time for system to adjust.  I give my dd some water with her meals, on the recommendation of the pediatrician.
  • DD has had issues with constipation since starting solids. My ped recommended cutting out almost all grains. The only grains she gets is her gluten free puffs which has rice in it.  I have found that while prunes do help her so does papaya and peas. I give her some papaya at breakfast almost every morning. Occasionally I have to do a suppository.
