I am almost 33 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child and had my normal routine doctor appointment yesterday. When I was there they checked my blood pressure 4 times and it kept rising, ending with 168/98. My doctor sent me to the hospital for testing, blood work, monitoring, and a non-stress test. My blood pressure came back down in the hospital and they sent me home. I am doing the urine protein test today, which was the last test he ordered. I did not have any issues with my first pregnancy and I'm worried about my blood pressure, as it is always great. Has anyone had to deal with this, and what were your results? I am worried about bed rest and my doctor mentioned that he may possibly not let me go to my due date.
Re: High Blood Pressure
I had high blood pressure at my last appointment (though not as high as yours.. it just raised a red flag with my doctor because my bp had been exactly the same for the past 7 months and now 3 times in a row it was slightly higher). He told me that it could be toxemia/pre-eclampsia, but that you would have other symptoms (which he told me to watch for). Some of these are: swelling, pain on your right side, headaches, and protein in your urine (obviously not something you can notice on your own). His suggestions were to take it easy and stay in bed for a couple days (I had another appointment 2 days later), drink a lot of water and only lay on my left side (which was very uncomfortable for me).
He also told me that if I did have toxemia/pre-e, I would be induced at 37 weeks.
Try not to worry about it too much, until they give you a definite answer, because that could raise your blood pressure too.

I have pre-e and when my BP was about that, I was put on modified bedrest. I can go to work but must rest when I get home. When my BP went to the 180's/110's they started medication and decided to induce at 37 weeks. I go for weekkly BPPs to make sure that everything is OK. If you don't have any spilling of protein they will ususally have you monitor your BP at home for several days before making a diagnosis.
Good luck!
Yup, I've had slightly elevated blood pressure at my last four appointments, but 24-hour urine collection and blood work lab results all came back just fine. The OB that went over my results on Monday wasn't concerned, since I have no other issues like quick weight gain or swelling, and didn't feel any of the symptoms of high BP in between appointments. Sometimes pregnancy just causes slightly elevated blood pressure.
