Toddler beds and childproofing

I'm thinking about switching E to a toddler bed soon, but I'm very concerned about her safety playing in her room totally unsupervised. How did you convince yourself that your space was totally safe for your LO? Are there any good checklists that you refer to? I'm just worried that I'll miss something.

Re: Toddler beds and childproofing

  • I have no links for a  list but here would be my priorities in no particular order.

    1. Strap furniture.

    2. Outlet covers.

    3. Remove anything small or enticing off top of dressers (to prevent climbing).

    4. Choking hazards.

    5. Electrical cords, somehow they have to be hidden or moved out of reach.

    6. Lock windows.

    7. Strangulation hazards, like the cords from blinds and such.

This list is literally giving me palpitations, and this is why I haven't switched my 2.5 yr old yet and have absolutely no plans for my 15 month old anywhere in the near future....

  • With E we just made sure nothing was in his reach he couldn't have unsupervised and there were toys and books he could to entertain him when he woke up. We also taught him how to go downstairs on his belly and we practiced him coming across the hall to knock on our door. We never had any issues. We haven't switched Lo yet but I did put a gate across her doorway and I can still close the door with it there. For her it will stay up once we switch to the toddler bed. I'm thinking spring or early summer especially if she's doing we'll with potty training as she has a potty in her room. I might look into something to keep her drawers closed since she loves to mess with her clothes.
  • The big thing are outlets and cords.  Know your baby with these.  DD had these plates where you had to put a plug in and twist and push before you could actually get at the outlets.  They were fine for her but they just enticed DS to try and cram things in.  So instead we have these covers that require lots of upper body strength and prayer to get out.

All our cords run behind or under heavy furniture and are not accessable by the little monster.

How much you baby proof really depends on your child.  I suggest going into her room with her and letting her roam around, see what she gets into.

DD was afraid to get out of bed once she was in it so we really didn't have to do much.

  • Can I ask why the rush for a toddler bed?  I am just curious because I don't see any benefits to it.

  • My son will be in a crib until he learns to climb out. If he is safe in there I am not going complicate things by switching to a toddler bed any time soon. Is there a benefit to a toddler bed that I am missing?
  • The only reason DS is in one is because he can climb out of a crib, he's fallen twice and I figure a messy room is better than a head injury.

i know that is why you did it, I am curious why others would want to transition so early.
