Freezing Purees

For those who have, or plan to make and freeze your own Purees, do you plan to add formula/BM before freezing, or afterward to get your desired consistency? I was doing some reading on wholesomebabyfood, and it says you can do either, but I was curious as to everyone's experience with purees. TIA!

Re: Freezing Purees

  • Yeah, I added while I was making the puree, before I froze it.

  • I hardly ever added BM to purees. I would thin with the water the food was cooked in (except carrots...and something else maybe? Can't remember). I just never have enough BM to use for anything extra.

  • I pured and froze bananas last weekend and did not add anything to it before freezing. However, once I thaw and use the bananas if they need a bit of cereal to thicken them up I will put it in then.

If I may ask a question to any moms doing pures, have any of you tried putting a splash of lemon juice in veggies to keep them from darkening? I found a website that suggested putting one teaspoon of lemon juice per a banana, but now I'm worried that the acid might hurt DS. I tried them and you can't taste the lemon.

  • I pureed pears, bananas and oatmeal today to freeze.  I used the leftover liquid from boiling the pears to thin them out, it was a little less than 1/4 cup leftover and I only did 1 pear.  The bananas got a tiny bit of liquid but didn't need much because they were very ripe.  The oatmeal was 1/4 cup of oatmeal boiled with 1 cup of water and I pureed that as it was with no additional liquid.

  • No, I've never added BM to purees. I use some of the water that I simmered the veggies/fruit in to adjust the consistency.

eta- oh & I added a grain to bulk it up after I've defrosted the puree, once DS got a little older.

  • I added formula to my purees before freezing. I mashed avocado and added formula and froze and they didn't brown at all.

  • I didn't put any formula or BM in my purees. I found that mine were a fine consistency and my lo seems ok with it. I love Wholesomebabyfood though! Great site and book!

This. This time around, I may rely on frozen milk to add to food, so I'll be stirring it in right before DD eats it.
