Hello Everyone. My name is Brittany and I am 22 years old. I'm recently married ( September 15, 2012), and TTC. I was diagnosed with Celiac disease in 2007. I am religiously following a gluten-free diet. I have two concerns. One, will having Celiac disease affect my chances of getting pregnant? Two, will my child most likely also be affected by this disease? Any answers/advice welcome! Thanks.
Re: (INTRO) TTC with Celiac disease
Hey Brittany,
I also have Celiac since 2008. I am going to be honest and this is just my experience but we were TTC for one month before being blessed with our positive test. I am not 18 weeks and I have not had one problem. My doctor does not seem concerned at the moment about the baby and my diet. I am worried later on because my baby will not be exposed to gluten until he/she starts to eat on own. At this point, just like any other new food we will introduce it by itself to check for a reaction. My husband and I eat mostly gluten free anyway due to my diet so it would not really affect the baby as much as we may think. We should keep in touch!

I was diagnosed with celiac in 2009. I had 2 children prior to my diagnosis. They were both completely healthy, though my pregnancies were horrible (severe hyperemesis). After my diagnosis I went very strictly gluten free and had another baby. He was also perfectly healthy and my pregnancy was not nearly as bad as my first two. I was still pretty sick, but not to a point where it was crazy abnormal. I wanted a fourth child and my fourth pregnancy ended in a miscarriage, but I have no reason to suspect celiac disease was responsible. I am currently pregnant again and so far everything looks fine, though it is still quite early.
Your children will have a risk of celiac but it is slightly lower than the risk of full blooded siblings. The risk is estimated to be between 1:10 to 1:20 for children. So the odds are your children will not have it, but it is certainly possible. None of my children have celiac disease, they have been tested and are all negative so far.
