High-Risk Pregnancy

Cerclage and general anesthesia

I will be getting my cerclage placed next wed. 1/30/13 I will be 13 weeks

With my last cerclage I had a spinal and was numb from the waist down.  I also was given something that made me feel sleepy but I was not all the way asleep.  Things turned out fine.

Well this time around ( New doctor ) I will be getting general anesthesia and be fully knocked out during the procedure.  Does this mean my baby will also be under anesthesia and feel the same affects I do??  I'm worried that my baby will be at risk.  I am already a very high risk and just don't want anything else to add to my problems.  Anyone else get general anesthesia during their pregnancy??  Or know if my baby will feel the affects of it?? Please help!!

Re: Cerclage and general anesthesia

  • i would suggest the spinal as well. i was told that the general anesthesia was not recommended for pregnant women. ask your doctor since you have already had a cerclage that was placed using the spinal anesthesia. good luck!

  • I was put all the way under for my cerclage. I was told there were minimal risks anesthesia and to be honest I think my doctors were more comfortable with me being all the way out due to the horrible position they put me. My legs were basically hoisted way above my head exposing everything. Today I am happy I made them comfortable because the lady who does my sonos always comments about how high my stitch is. Kind of related, but at the hospital I work at some women have to be put under anesthesia for emergency csections or failed spinals and we, nicu team, do have to attend the delivery and monitoring of the baby afterwards. I haven't seen any issues with the babies coming out yet. They are still awake and crying when coming out. Good luck and prayers for a successful procedure.
  • I was put under for mine and agree I was probably better off for it. The aniesthesiologist explained that I would be getting a very low dose, twilight, and they would monitor the baby. I was 17w at the time. My stitch was very high and tight too, I actually had two stitches, so I feel like my doc was better able to do his job with me out.

  • I had a spinal & no other meds when my cerc was placed at 12 weeks. I'm sure your doc is doing what they are most comfortable with. If you do not agree I'd suggest seeing another dr.
