What do you do..

When your LO is sick or is running a fever and he/she does not want to eat or drink?

I am not sure if it is teething since he will not open his mouth.

Last night he woke up crying and fever. Gave him some medicine but the little guy would not go back to sleep. That was at 4. Finally around 8am he slept but has been up since 10ish.

Now we are chilling on the couch. He has had some sips of water and two goldfish :-( I tried soup but nope.

Re: What do you do..

  • Have you tried different cups? Does he drink bath water? You could always stick him in the bath for some water, lol.

Does he like ketchup? Will he dip anything in it? What about frozen fruit in a mesh teether thing? Or just frozen fruit if you don't think he will choke... What if you fed him off of your plate with your fork?

Unsolicited Advice: When was the last time he had tylenol? I would try to feed him about 45 minutes after he has a dose of tylenol. As long as he is still having wet diapers and taking sips here and there, he should be okay. If he stops going to the bathroom because he won't eat anything, I would call the pedi.

  • Yup bottles, sippies and out of my cup and water bottle.

I have him in the bath now. He is a little fussy but drinking a little bath water.

No on ketchup and I will try some fruit next.

DH is going to the store for medicine and pedialyte.

Thanks so much Tuna. I hate asking for help sometimes but I really want him to feel better.

  • Try some pedialyte ice pops.  DD wasn't crazy about them, but I think that's because she was more worried about throwing up after eating anything.

If he's taking little sips here and there, he'll probably be just fine.  And once he's feeling better, he'll be gulping down water like crazy.

  • I'm sorry little Bear isn't feeling well :( I hope he gets better soon.

To answer your question, I don't really do anything the first 24 hours food/drink wise.

I keep a sippy cup of water at hand, or even watered down juice. Usually she will eat again within 24 hours or so. I also try to offer her favourite, easy-to-eat food, like fruit pouches and yogurt.

  • We do juice boxes. I only ever give her juice when I'm worried about her not drinking enough from sickness but I think this makes the boxes extra special because she gobbles it up. Once finished with the juice I just refill them with water and she drinks that as well.

    This is a good idea.

Awww sorry he's not feeling well :(

Like others, we do pedialyte and pedialyte ice pops. I don't force the food issue.  I just worry about hydration.

He gets 2-3 oz of juice a day with about 5 oz of water mixed to keep him from being constipated.  But when he's sick, he'll get straight juice and it's like a treat.  Or those Odwalla kid smoothies.  They're a complete rip off but he loves them.  I'm willing to spend $5 on a 4 pack when he's sick to avoid having to take time to make him a smoothie.

Thanks. My baby bear just does not care for juice but hopefully when he is older.

The smoothie drink...are they available at Costco?
