Formal name for my baby Josie?

Hey ladies! I need to hear some thoughts so I can really make up my mind about my baby girl to be's name. Hubby and I LOVE the name Josie, and plan on calling her that, but we want her to have a formal name in case she ends up secretary of state or something :)

So what do you all think of Joslyn Jane?

We had originally planned on Josephine but I just don't love it. I'm usually pretty against alternative spellings, but from what I've found Joslyn is an accepted spelling and pronounced a bit differently from Jocelyn, it would be said Jahs-lynn not Jahs-ah-lynn, but really my main reasoning for using it is that I want the name to start with Jos so we can use Josie and I just think its prettier and a little more modern than Josephine.

I would love to hear anyone's thoughts, good or bad, I can take it! I just want to make sure I'm not missing something or doing something really dumb here. Thanks!!

  • I think it is nice and you should go with it!

  • I prefer Josephine to Joslyn/Jocelyn but I think it's a fine name. However, I don't think the name needs to start with Jos to get the nn Josie, so I would use the traditional spelling. NNs don't really adhere to any rules, like my H is Thomas but spells Tom without an h, etc.
  • Of course I love Josie, but mine is also a Josephine.  Most people assume that when I say her name is Josie.

I do like Jocelyn, but I wouldn't put Josie with it. But if it isn't a big deal, go with it.

That's too funny! My preference for a middle name with Josephine is Belle too! It's not my husband's favorite though, we have been back and forth on Belle, Claire, and Jane for middles... and then today Joslyn popped up to further complicate things.

I appreciate the insight so far! Any other thoughts are more than welcome too!

  • I don't think Joslyn sounds very "formal" at all. It actually sounds trendy and young to me, especially with the "y", and it even looks a little made up.  I think Josephine is a much better name for a future Secretary of State!

  • I love Joslyn...actually it was on my list of names for my baby girl.  It didn't win for us but i love that name!  :)
  • I really like it! Especially with the middle name Jane!

  • A friend named her baby Jocelyn and they call her Josie.  Doesn' t matter about the spelling.

  • Jocelyn was my #1 girl name; until DH vetoed it (and we found out it was a boy).  So naturally I like it.

I'm sure these are a bit of a stretch to get to Josie, but I also like Joelle and Jolene.

  • Oh and FWIW - if you have every intention of calling her Josie - then I say name her Josie.  The girl name we had decided on was Lucy; and my sister kept asking what its short for....  nothing, we planned on calling her Lucy.

OUr DS will be John; not Jonathan...  just John.

  • Thanks thanks so much for the feedback! I think I'm settled on Joselyn Jane! I do still have about 2 months to change my mind again though ;)
