Birthday Parties

DS's 2nd birthday is coming up and I am trying to decide what to go with.  He is REALLY into The Polar Express and seems to like trains (not necessarily into Thomas or Chuggington, just trains).  He also loves Yo Gabba Gabba.  I was talking to my mom about it and she made the comment that he won't like things like Yo Gabba Gabba and I should go with that. 

The above it just me writing my thoughts down, but how do you feel about "themes"  Do you go commercial for parties (Elmo, Disney, etc) or just keep it simple with a basic theme (trains, luau, etc)?

    I started "themes" when my kids were 2 because that was the age they started to get "get into things." If your DS just likes trains in general, then he would be happy with anything trains, imo. We did Barney for DD's 2nd birthday and she loved seeing the Barney decorations. My youngest likes Elmo and Mickey so I'm not sure what we'll do for her 2nd.

    DS's birthday isn't for another 5 months and I haven't started planning it yet, but I admit that I have already decided on a Sesame Street theme. I figure the days of me getting to pick the theme are soon to be over, so I wanted to do this one. Last year we did a generic jungle theme based on some plates I got at Party City. I think in the future we may do more generic themes, but will kind of leave it up to him. I like the party planning and all the details and decorations so I tend to get really into it.

    For J's first and second birthday I did loose themes. I did snow (snowmen, snowflakes) for his first and trucks, airplanes, boats, trains for his second.  This year I asked him what he wanted and he said Mickey and Minnie, so we did that.  I think before 3, they really don't care.  Honestly I think he probably chose Mickey this year because he had just watched Mickey Mouse Clubhouse right before I asked him, he likes so many other things too so it really could have gone any way.  I think it's fun, once they can reasonably voice an opinion, to ask them.

    For C's first 2 birthdays I will probably do a loose theme as well like whales, lady bugs, bee's, etc, until I can ask her.

    We started doing themes at A's 2nd birthday party. I really have no problem with the theme party and really all your going is some decorations, right? I know once they get older they get more demanding, and they wants their friends there, on location somewhere. (A wants a bouncy house party for her 4th!).

    We did loose themes for D1's 1st and 2nd birthdays - bunnies because she was born around Easter and Tea for 2.  Her 3rd birthday she asked for a "Pink Piggy Pizza Pool Party" so we went with it and had pizza at Kids First Swim School.

    D2 we did a Movember Theme because, well, because I'm a huge dork and thought it was a funny idea.  It turned out well.  :) 

     D1 is already asking for a Barbie pool party but it also swtiches to My LIttle Pony and Littlest Pet Shop.  Who knows.

    We haven't really had too much "theme" for DD's birthday party - maybe if I was really into photographing them/scrapbooking them, I could see more point in a theme, but honestly, DD is happy to just run around and play.

    Last year, we got a handful of Dora decorations - plates, table top, banners and I guess the invitations and TY notes were Dora too, but it was just as easy to get generic pink vs. Dora stuff, so it wasn't any additional effort.  This year, we had a dance/ballet party for her - and really didn't do much in the way of "theme."

    We've been to themed and unthemed parties and the kids seems equally happy at both - so if you want to do it b/c you like, do it, but the kids are all pretty happy w/ any kind of party.  And, for myself too, I guess I kinda want to set the bar low so that I don't become one of those people's who's freaking about what to do for their 8 yos party that hasn't already been done.

    We've been doing themes since their 1st birthdays but mostly because it makes it easier for me to do cutesy things. We did pirates, dragons for first birthdays(B,C). 2nd was rock and roll for him so it was loose, Blue's Clues for her. 3rd for him was hard as his favorite thing was Imagination Movers on Disney. They didn't sell any party things at that point so we went with things from the show and primary colors which is a large part of the show as well. For her 3rd birthday, she wants princess tea party so I feel like we're getting more loose as we go on. He did superheroes for his 4th and most likely his 5th with some Phineas and Ferb added in.

    I forgot to say that I agree with Kathryn. Kids are usually happy as long as there is cake and something to do and friends to play with. My friend had a Yo Gabba Gabba birthday last year for her 2 year old as he was so in love with the show. It was My Gym so the only thing YGG related were the cupcakes(which were so awesome), the plates, and the favor bags(she made bags with the YGG faces on them).

    Thanks for all the different outlooks!  I know it's ultimately up to me, and last year I did a lot and had all of 3 pictures taken the entire time.  I was so busy with everything else.  His birthday is less than 2 months away, so this weekend I will be making all the decisions.  I also figure that DS won't really care anyway, he will be running around and hopefully not having a meltdown like he did last year Tongue Tied

    I've only done 1 kid party so far and we did Elmo...but I am either way-general or themes...really depends.  I think we're going with a pink owl theme this year...so not really a commercial theme...lots of DIY and pink.

    From my experience, it just depends on what your child is into.  For the 1st birthdays, I picked a general theme (snow for DD, crabs for DS) but for my DD's second (and soon 3rd - gulp!) we're did/are doing Mickey and now Minnie because that's what she loves.  She loved her cake last year (I ordered it from Giant) and it makes it easy when people ask what they can buy for her because I just mention what the theme will be and they can buy an inexpensive toy or book and she will love it.
