Mixing rice cereal with fruits & veggies/ 6 mos. solids feeding schedule

My DD is 6 months and I started her on rice cereal about 2 weeks ago and this week she started on solids which I am making at home!! (sweet potato so far, and moving to pears, apples, bananas over the next week or so). I read that I should still give her rice cereal in addition to fruits/veggies for the iron intake, and I am wondering 2 things: 1. do any moms out there feed both cereal and veggies/fruits throughout the day and when/how much and 2. do you ever combine rice cereal with a fruit or veggie and how do you do that? Do you make the rice cereal as you normally would and combine with pureed fruit/veggie OR do you just stir the rice cereal powder form (not mixed with Formula or BM) into the puree. That is what confuses me most (when they say, "cereal mixed with fruit or veggie).

I should preface that she is in daycare and I bring her around 8:30am. She is still just starting out but the whole "quantity of solids with the right variety for nutrients" is just so confusing to me :)  thanks!!

  • I find regular purees to be too runy, so I stir in dry rice. It helps thicken it up and also gives that extra iron that you mentioned. It's really up to you though. If your baby likes it thinner, then go ahead and mix the cereal with whatever liquid you usually use.

  • Good questions! When I did give rice cereal, I mixed it part bm or formula as per usual. As I began with fruit, I added it to the typical formula or bm mixture since most nutrition comes from bf or ff. Me pedi told me to make it applesauce like consistency. I added fruit to make the rice cereal more pleasant tasting and eventually moved on. Some moms I'm sure use as a breakfast routine and others do away with it all together. Just depends on what works for you... it's easy to get overwhelmed from online opinions. So if you feel confused, jot it down and wait for your pedi appmnt. or call them...
