Sharing Newborn Pics

hey all! lurker here, sorta. introduced on other boards, but FYI, I am a FTM and exepecting in a few short weeks! baby girl. :)

quick question though; i've been debating on whether or not to share my newborn pics on facebook. i was thinking about putting the pics in some kind of online album & giving friends/family the password. not real good at blogs & keeping up with them, so that's a no-go. just something simple to post pictures on. there are so many sites out there to share pics, so i was just wondering which ones you would recommend (or ones not to). :)

 TIA!

Re: Sharing Newborn Pics

  • I personally really like Picasa for uploading and sharing photos.

  • Are you wanting them to be private? I put all of my pictures on snapfish so then people can order them if they want to (like from weddings, etc)

MPIX is what I have heard is the best place to actually print pictures from, but I havent looked much into that yet.

  • i dont understand what the big deal is about posting on facebook?

  • we are putting them on Facebook but you can manage who is able to see them... or at least you should be able to...

some of the other sites PPs mentioned are good for people who don't have Facebook or if you aren't comfortable putting them there

  • Is it a matter of wanting to keep the pictures private?   You can always limit those on your facebook friend list who can see specific pictures.  You would just simply add all the 'safe' people to a list (or group) from your friend list.  When you post the album make sure that it can only be viewed by that group of people.

If it is a matter of making the pictures available to order....the OP had some great advice on how to handle that.

  • If you want to put things on facebook, check your sharing settings. If you allow people to share your photos, then THEIR friends can share their photos due to "friendship" even if you are not friends with them. I am avoiding facebook photos.

  • I do post pics on FB but most of my family isn't on there, anyway. We have a Snapfish account and sent people in my family a link/invite early on, so they can just log on whenever to see new pics. You can also order directly through the site (either to be shipped or sent to a Walgreens and printed or whatever), which is nice.
  • FB with the tightest privacy settings and "friends only". Or you can even choose just certain friends.

  • Everyone has their right to their own privacy...but I always find it a bit weird when friends are uber private with their baby pics. I only have two friends (who are on FB) who are this way. I have very few people in my life that I'm close to who don't have FB (aside from older relatives and a few cousins). Anyways, the friends on FB who don't share photos on FB have shared them in other ways via private emails or a blog with a password. To be honest, I find it a bit pretentious to share exclusively with very few people. I don't check my old email address often so the photos the one couple would send DH and I started piling up. I couldn't be bothered to remember a password to check my other friend's blog. Maybe I would if these were really good friends of mine or were family members.

Actually, I also find it a bit attention-grabby to be so private. I don't have the time or interest to jump through hoops (like remembering to check old email addresses and remembering passwords) in order to see pics. When someone chooses to share that way with me, I feel like they're looking for extra attention and that what they have to share is just too damn special to share with the rest of the world. And so be it! Of course they should feel that way about their child(ren). But I don't necessarily feel that way. I much prefer to see photos that friends and family post on FB. I can do it at my own leisure. I can search for photos if I want to. I'm also a bit creeped out by people who are so paranoid and neurotic. Maybe that's why I'm not as close to them. Anyways. Just thought I would share my two cents. :)

  • Just don't use Dropbox! My mother-in-law insists that she shares her photos through it, and it has been such a pain. You have to start your own account, then download something to your computer. It also sends you pesky alerts when you're trying to import your own photos to your comp.

  • You can send a picture or two through a private FB message or group. That's what I did with my nursery photos. I understand wanting to be somewhat private. I plan on posting a few pics for everyone to see, and I don't have too many FB friends anyway. I only try to keep it limited to actual friends and family.
As for my nursery pics I posted them because a bunch of my aunts knew how much energy I put into it, but I didn't make them public because I have a few friends who are having a hard time TTC, and I know it stings when their news feed of full of things like that.

I am a fan of Facebook sharing, but I also understand why some people may not want to. Its a personal choice, and like a lot of people above have said, there are a lot of reasons why you may not want to share photos. Thats the beauty of the privacy controls, you can make it what you want it to be! Everyone has a right to share things in a way that makes them feel comfortable.

Because once something is on the Internet, it is not really private. There are child molesters all over the Internet doing all kinds of crazy things with photos of children, including infants. People make photoshopped child porn to get around the law because its a digitally created kid. Some people are just creepy and have random pictures of little kids doing kid stuff on their computer.
Sorry, but I have seen this stuff because of my job. I am not really interested to discover some molester with a digitally altered picture of my kid in a tub stolen from Facebook and traded all over the web.

  • Just didn't want to inundate some of my friend's fb with a lot of baby pics. Also, I've always thought it was a little weird for children pics to be posted on the Internet. As PP said, there's weirdos out there, and I don't want to start a habit of putting my children's pics online like that. That's all. I'll look into a private group or something on fb, but I think I need to do it from my actual computer (cause I can't figure out how to on my mobile devices).
