All right, so let's pretend I have a new house. And let's pretend that in that house, the girls will be sharing a room, while baby will be sleeping in another.
How would one go about painting/decorating those imaginary rooms?
I'm keeping this all on the hypothetical level here because I don't want to jinx anything by getting ahead of myself. ![]()
Re: Let's play pretend
I am not a fan of the super-gender-ized (is that even a word?) rooms, so going all princess in one room and all cars and trucks in the other really isn't an option I'd consider.
Right now, I'm entertaining the idea of going with the same base colours (I'm thinking some lighter shade of sage green and cream) in both rooms, and then adding gender specific accents, like maybe dots (like the ones Crash had in her DD's old nursery, but in only 2 or 3 colours) or wall decals, or just a strip of wall paper.
The nursery would be easy enough to put together as we already have everything we need.
I'm not sure how I would go about the girls room. Would one go with matching beds and bedding? Or maybe coordinate the beddings without them actually being identical?
I am so not an interior decorator!
Well, what I'm doing (and I'm assuming this will be semi-helpful since you and I are in practically the same situation with the two girls and one boy thing) is coordinating the two rooms color-wise and adding things that are more specific to gender to each one. Hopefully this will save me money on paint, at least, because I won't have to buy two cans each of two (or more) different colors.
The girls already have their preferences, so I'll just be adding things like birds and butterflies and whatever other things they like to their room. Baby boy is getting more general stuff. I found a vintage hat box that just happened to have his middle name printed on it, and I'm going to mount it on one of the walls in his room. I'm going to hang a sturdy stick (cleaned and stripped of its bark) from the ceiling near his changing table that will display an outfit of the day or hold a spare blanket or whatever. Got that idea from Pinterest. I am so cool.
His bedding, window treatments, rugs and other accents are all going to be pretty general too. Stripes and chevrons and plain colors. Nothing to do with automobiles, dinosaurs, sports, or anything of that nature.

Growing up my sister and I shared a room. My mom let us each pick out our own bedding that she had narrowed down. Both sets matched the pale purple on the walls. I had Barney and my sister had flowers. It really wasn't very appealing but it made my sis and I happy. It was o,ur room so that's what mattered to us.
Based on what is popular now and your idea, I would keep it calm and simple and do, some personalized vinyls so each girl has her own piece in the room. You could do sage green walls and find comforters to match that. Then cream vinyls, decor and curtains.

Nothing, really. When we bought the condo, we knew that room would eventually be the baby's room, but weren't expecting yet, so we painted it in a light yellow. We also knew we would have 2 kids, and that they would share the room, so even after DD1 was born, we kept it pretty neutral. Then DD2 was born, and we knew we'd be moving in the not-so-distant future, so it's still pretty bare. The only thing I really like is the crib bedding, which is why I'm leaning towards the green/cream colour scheme.
And now I'm off to stalk my PM's
I like lots of bright colors for kids so for the girls I would go witht he neutral wall let them pick their own solid color bedspread and go from there. They can then pick their own bright pillow/stuffed animals for the beds. The walls would have shelves to rotate stuff they like or something that allows easy switching, like bulltien boards or wall clings.
For girls, I'm a big fan of the tree decals for the wall. I also love a room I saw once that was aqua with a cherry blossom branch. It added just enough pink to make the blue walls feminine.
My friend's nursery for a girl is a creamy yellow, but all of the bedding is deeper red/green/blue. The curtain is a naturegarden theme, with birds and branches. It's pretty neutral, and quite nice.
Anyway...just tossing out ideas.
Thanks for the suggestions ladies - And keep them coming!
In this hypothetical scenario, the girls are still too young to pick their bedding. DD1 loves something one day, then doesn't care for it the next. And if I let her pick, she will probably go with some Disney character, and I really don't want to do that. As for DD2, well, she just doesn't care yet.
Lala, I like the idea of finding one thing that I love and working the room around it.
Now to find that one piece I love... lol
I would either paint both rooms light, or sage green or I think a blue grey would be really nice and gender neutral. I agree with painting both rooms the same colors. You're probably going to be painting most of your new house, why add more work for yourself by painting them two different colors.
I wouldn't do any kind of wall paper or paint because it's hard to change. IMO, wall stickers are the way to go. Etsy has tons of wall stickers. Or PBK has super cute wall stickers.
Light blue goes well with pink for the girls or brown for your little boy. Sage looks pretty with purple for the girls, I would probably pair it with browns for the boy room.
Again, I heart wall stickers, they are so easy and cute.
Baby boys room I have a wonderful blue bedspread you can have. It has a maple leaf on it!
I think that bedspread would be better use as cloth diaper
I love the idea of doing both rooms in a sage green color. I think it's really easy to coordinate other colors with that. I like plain walls, and then accenting with fun bedding and curtains and pictures/paintings on the walls. It's super easy to re-do a room later by just switching up some bedding and curtains, if you don't have to worry about taking down wallpaper.
We did DD's room in a sage because we were Team Green. Now that all of her stuff is going to the baby's room, I'm finding it really fun and easy to re-decorate and make her room a little more "girly," even sticking with the green base. We are going to get white furniture and accent with purple and white bedding and curtains. I'm glad we don't have themed wallpaper or a border to contend with, it's going to be an easy revamp.
