Toddlers: 24 Months+

So we've got her to go to bed, but now...

it's a matter of getting her to stay there! I wake up every morning with her in our bed, not knowing that she even climbed in. One friend gave me advice of putting a door knob safety on the inside of her door so she can't get out, but....uhm...NO? That makes me nervous to even think about.

Any suggestions? I would just put her back in bed, but I don't even wake up to her climbing in. Pregnancy has me flat out exhausted I guess.

Re: So we've got her to go to bed, but now...

  • I'm no help, I was just coming to post about my toddler not staying in her new toddler bed.  I have a 10 week old baby, so we are already exhausted as well.  I'll be watching this thread for tips!

I am also very against gates or things on the door knobs.  It's just not safe to me.

I bought a kid's night light clock that tells them when to get up by turning green, but so far that hasn't helped either.

  • We put the baby lock on the inside of the door too.  What's the difference of that or a toddler who was too little to reach the door knob.  If there was an emergency, you would go to that room first and your toddler would be too scared to leave the room if the fire alarm went off so it's not like it going to be a factor.  Baby lock has made all the difference in the world.  LO goes to his door and knocks if he gets up, but at least he is safe and I don't have to worry about his loose in the house where there are many other "hazards" (like stairs, front doors, etc.)

  • Our sleep lady's says its better to put a lock so they can't come out of the room. If there was a true emergency you would get your child first.

  • It makes me nervous putting a lock on because of how exhausted I have been lately. I'm afraid I wouldn't hear her cry if she needed me. I don't want to not hear her, and her think I just shoved her in her room and left.

  • I don't like the idea of locking them in! Personally if she crawls into the bed at night and u don't even realize, is it really a problem? It's not interrupting your sleep and she'll sleep through the night when shes ready.
  • I am NOT against using a gate or a lock.  However, I have chosen not to do this simply because I am thinking ahead to potty training.  I don't want my LO thinking he can't leave his room.  In a few months he should leave his room to go pee pee should he feel the urge.  I see the lock as a short term solution you would have to retrain during potty training!?  My little guy comes into our bed (and I was totally against that for the first 2 years....).  Now, I say as long as we are all getting sleep...who cares!? :)

  • When we had issues with DD we put a childproof knob on her door.  I wasn't going to do it but figured it's the same as using a baby gate.  It didn't take her long to realize she couldn't get out.  Now, she can open her door with the childproof lock but she rarely comes out.

Great point!  I hadn't thought about potty training because this started for us as soon as LO could walk.
