March 2012 Moms

sometimes i wonder why i have dogs...

Ugh.. just a vent.. no I'm not going to rehome them, they are family.. my first kids... I'm just so annoyed with them lately. It doesn't help that we just spent ALL of Saturday doing baths and hair cuts in them. It's been very cold out for the last week so they haven't been on any walks and can barely stand to go out in the yard to pee. Every morning since its been so cold I let them out four times.. three of those times they hit the snow, go 5 feet, turn around and run back to the house. No potty.. then they bark at me to let them back out. Annoying when you are busy trying to feed the baby breakfast.

Anyway that's not what I'm really annoyed about. I'm annoyed because they are ALWAYS waking her up from her naps or keeping her from going down at all. They always find something. I'm most annoyed because they just ran to the window barking at NOTHING and waking up the baby after only a 20 minute nap. Just annoyed.

  • I felt and feel the same way you describe. We have two terriers---my first babies, and I love them dearly. But, yes, they can wear on me these days as a new and working mom.

I try to focus on how much fun my LO is having with them as he gets older. I try to remember that one of the terriers sits by the bathtub as I bathe LO, acting all protective of him. And the other terrier loves to play with with LO with the toys cars. Dogs are as innocent as kids. They can teach each other so much, and teach us some things as well.

When I get frustrated with them, I have a gated off area for them now in our sunroom. They get lots of natural light and have lots of space in there to play. If they start to bark, I've started making this new noise that doesn't wake the baby, but gets them to quiet down.

  • Can you close the blinds when she goes down? That is frustrating. Mine only bark if someone is near the house, but I am tired of cleaning up after them. Now that DS is all over the floor I am constantly vacuuming and washing them. I would barely need to clean if we didn't have dogs!

  • I feel you. My dog is very in-your-face so I feel like I have a baby and a toddler already. She and DS love each other but she can get a little too rowdy so I'm constantly having to keep an eye on both of them, usually trying to just keep them separated. I try to keep in mind how much fun they'll have playing together in a couple of years!
  • Haha this is the story of our life. I need to buy a water bottle to start spraying my dog to cut back on his barking. It's out of control these days. Not to mention he steals everything and anything from our son. Ours is also baby #1 so he will always be with us no matter what..but having a kid definitely makes it tough. I have been horrible at doing walks lately because it's so cold so to his defense that is my fault :)

  • I feel that way about only one of my dogs, lol. My "needy" one was a show dog that had 100% of my time since birth. We traveled together and were always together. He's kind of a weirdo because he's not super lovey but is really into me in an obsessive way. He has always been an attention hound and whines when he wants anything, which is seemingly constant. If you ignore it, he continues, louder and louder until we finally ended up screaming at him. We're now trying to tone train him with a collar to cut it out. It's mildly helping but if you don't have the remote in hand at all times, and you miss the start of the whine, he doesn't always get it. He has always whined but now, it's so much more grating when I'm trying to keep the baby happy and everything balanced.

My other dog is awesome. He may as well be a rug that hugs and cuddles (they're both Old English Sheepdogs). Nothing bugs him and he never makes trouble. He's such a good boy. I always say to the whiny one "Why can't you just be more like your brother?"
