I have my NT ultrasound tomorrow morning and they will be drawing blood for a newer test called "harmony". It's a noninvasive DNA test that screens for downs and other genetic disorders. Has anyone had this? What kind of results were offered? Did your insurance cover it? TIA!!
Re: Harmony Testing
I haven't had it, but our insurance doesn't cover any genetic testing. We get an "insurance rate" on it, so it's not full price, but we pay completely out of pocket.
At any rate, I've lurked on my new BMB and several people had gotten th eHarmony screening, so you might check with others on your new BMB or a BMB or two earlier.
Mine is scheduled on Feb 8th. I got paperwork at my first prenatal, it doesn't seem like that big a deal. The false positive rate is crazy low. I'm still on the fence, but leaning towards doing it. It's about $2,000 though so make sure your insurance pays.
Also, you can find out the sex. If you are so inclined. Its wild. We're 'team green' so we won't be finding out, but I read up on it because I thought there was no way but it can. Crazy.
That IS crazy!!!! I will be sure to ask before the test tomorrow so I don't have to pay out of pocket. Thanks for the info!
I did not get an NT scan this time because it was all going to be out of pocket thanks to my insurance and when the OB was billing it (the results would not have changed anything for us, so it wasn't really neccessary... I didn't think paying $1k out of pocket was worth it). I dont know if my office does the Harmony testing, but I know several people on my BMB had it done. I can't believe they can find out sex that early via a blood draw, but they do!
Definitely make sure insurance covers it before agreeing to it. How much would that suck getting a $2000 bill you weren't expecting?!?

We were offered Verifi in place of Harmony. As far as I know, most of these are similar and are cureently in patent wars as to who was first to market yada-yada... in the meantime, Docs have choices.
As for insurance, I have not yet been billed for it so I am not sure if it will be covered or not. However, I was given a pamphlet at the time of the test that gave me options. Basically, I would not have to pay more than $200 out of pocket.
If I were you, I would probably only get the test if you had a reason to dig deeper or if I was 100% sure it was covered by insurance. My LO has a choroid plexus cyst which is why we opted to do it regardless of the cost.
