Food Allergy

Milk allergy not outgrown by 1 year old?

Hi there!  I posted about 7-8 months ago when DS was about 5 months old and was diagnosed with MSPI.  I was EP at the time and eliminated dairy from my diet as instructed.  But it showed no improvement and he lost a significant amt of weight, so pedi GI put him on Elecare.  He did so well on Elecare and DS turned a year old on Friday.  We had a f/u with GI about a week before his 1st birthday.  He said would could give him dairy, like yogurt and cheese.  We had already given him things that had dairy baked into them, like bites of muffins, pasta with cheese, etc.  And he did great with them.

We introduced him to dairy yogurt and cheese this past week and he has developed a wet, non-productive cough and runny nose.  He's not "sick" per se, as he's not febrile.  And he seems fine otherwise.  The cough seems worse at night and it's definitely not croup or anything.  To me, as a nurse, it seems like a possible allergy.

Then we have given him 1 oz cow's milk mixed in with about 4 oz Elecare.  He drank it without any problem.  But after the 2nd bottle of Elecare/cow's milk, he had projectile vomiting.  And he vomited again in the middle of the night.  He seemed fine otherwise.  And we had his 1st birthday party yesterday, so he had all sorts of foods, like cake w/icing, cheese, veggies, fruit, etc.  So who knows if it was related to the milk but it seems to conincidental for him to be having all of these issues suddenly.

GI referred us to an allergist when DS was about 9 months old.  He had low positive scratch testing to peanuts, eggs and soy.  But milk was fine.  And the blood tests for peanuts, eggs and soy were negative.  Allergist just said to not give him any peanut products until we see her again at 21 months and to avoid soy milk and things like scrambled eggs.

GI released us and made it sound like he wouldn't have a problem with dairy.  But I'm thinking I'll call him tomorrow anyway.  DS doesn't have his 1 year checkup with regular pedi for another week and a half.  I'll definitely mention it there.

I'm just scared and concerned.  I was so excited for DS to get off of Elecare and onto cow's milk.  And I feel like I don't know what to feed him.  I almost want to meet with a dietician to see what I can give him.  What kind of milk do you give a child who has dairy and soy allergies, and possibly other tree nuts?

Re: Milk allergy not outgrown by 1 year old?

  • LO didn't test positive for milk allergies but had hives when he had milk until 18-20 months. Now all he drinks is cow's milk and he's doing great. That said, we never did have a problem with yogurt and cheese. Just straight milk.

Lots of people don't ever give their kid cow's milk- some think it's weird and unnatural. It'll be more difficult while avoiding cheese and yogurt, but just find some ways to get fats, protein, and calcium into LO (quinoa is great  for protein, avocado for fats) and give water to drink.

  • I know my GI told us that if DS fails whole milk ( we are just starting the trail also MSPI) that we wait a month and try it again That they tend to grow out of it about a year to 15 months. I'm sorry I hope he grows out of it soon.
  • Hi there, I remember you from back then...we were in the same shoes.

My LO is on Elecare as well. She has a confirmed allergy to dairy (as well as to other things), so we're not even trying any dairy with her.

It's not the end of the world, really. We do a combo of Elecare (2 bottles) and coconut milk as well as a diet high in coconut oil and Sunbutter.

Don't be discouraged if your LO can't eat dairy just yet, there are tons of healthy alternatives out there.GL.
