PW: Breaking the swaddle

I think C might be ready to sleep unswaddled but at the same time he wakes himself up with his arms and legs whenever we have tired this before.  He fights the swaddle though during the night and is starting to escape from it(we use swaddleme's).  How did you transition from swaddled to not swaddled to sleep?

Re: PW: Breaking the swaddle

  • We started at right about the same time, if I remember correctly.  We did it gradually, started with one arm out, then both, then tried a sleep sack, and then just regular PJ's because he hated the sleep sack.  It's going to take some getting used to because their arms are all over the place.  For us, it was necessary because he started to roll over onto his tummy while swaddled.... I had a small heart attack the first time that happened.

  • We are in exactly the same boat.  In fact, I just posted yesterday about tummy sleeping too!  We've been doing one arm out for a while, but she wakes up constantly!  I was going to try no swaddle and putting her on her tummy last night, but she had a massive melt down right before bedtime to daddy swaddled her up good and tight, both arms in.  It was the only way to get her calm enough to nurse before bed.  Little stinker!  GL though, and please keep us posted, I would love to hear how this works for you.

  • I used a woombie as an intermediate swaddle before D was ready to go without. I would not break the woombie swaddle habit until rolling becomes a issue. After that, I swaddled the lower half then transitioned to a sleep sack.

  • Google Baby Merlin's Magic Sleep Suit. It worked well for us, although others have said not for them.

  • Hi hunterjumper, M has been getting his arns out of the swaddles since day 1.  We used swaddlemes initially but he outgrew them by 1 month, so we switched to Halo swaddle/sleepsacks.  The Halo allow us to swaddle w/arms in or arms out.

The last few nights we purposefully left his R arm out.  M is so strong that his R arm has been lifting the swaddling flaps, which ends up covering his face!!!  Interestingly, with 1 arm in & 1 arm out, M is sleeping the longest these past few nights (7 hr stretch).

We also let both arms out after MOTN feed.  M goes into light sleep mode towards the morning which means he fights the swaddle more if his arms are swaddled.

  • We transitioned with sleepsacks, it was rough at the beginning but after a week or so they were back to a normal sleep routine.

  • We transitioned at about that age. She slept in a swaddle sleep sack, so we went 2 nights or so with one arm out, then went to both arms out with the swaddle wrapped about her belly fairly tightly. It actually went way better than I thought it would. She had one rough night with her arms out, but then it was fine.
