Urine test at 12 month check up....?

Anyone else had this done?  My mom had to take our dd in and they did her shots, etc.  said we could take off formula etc, and that she could stand to gain a little weight, she was in 25 percentile.  However they then wanted a urine sample.  I had never heard of this and I have asked a couple parents that I work with and they didn't have this done with their child's 12 month.  I called the receptionist and she said that this was a normal thing, that they like to have samples. Needless to say, dd did urinate and they put a cath in and she still didn't go.  That sounds pretty awful for a 12 month old.  They then told my mom that they didn't need to see her until April for her 15 month.  Anyone have any info here?

  • No...cathing a 12 mo is not a "standard practice" that's ridiculous.  Neither the ped. I take my dd to or the one I work for do this without reason. I would be calling and demanding to speak with the Dr. who ordered the test.

  • My LO had a bunch of tests done because she was not gaining weight...one included giving a urine sample.  Maybe it was related to her weight?

Agree w/ PPs, I'd be on the phone ASAP to find out what it was for and why. I have never heard of this before and you definitely wouldn't try to cath a 12 month old in the office, that I'm aware of. It is normal to have bloodwork at 12 months.

They do regularly cath. in office. A nurse actually does it.  but not without suspicion of something being wrong like an infection of some sort.

Oh, thanks. When we had a suspected UTI in my daughter and she wouldn't pee, the doc made it seem like they wouldn't cath her there, but maybe I misunderstood! Thankfully, we didn't need to find out.

It's totally possible your office chooses not to. I'm just saying the one I work for and the one I bring dd to do it in office. We got lucky once so far and haven't had to utilize that service either!

  • we had ours done at our 9 month check up. Urine sample and blood sample (finger prick). It didn't work well (pee got contaminated), so we repeated at our 12 month check up.

  • Never had a pee test at at 12 month appointment.  I just had my youngests one year appointment yesterday and the doctor didn't even look in the diaper!  She just asked if there was any diaper issues she needed to look at.  There aren't any, so she didn't look.

When my oldest had an ear infection at 11 months we did get tested for a UTI because of some of the symptoms and all they did was put a catch bag into her diaper.  So instead of the pee going into the diaper, it goes into the bag.  No cath necessary.  We just had to bring the bag back once she had peed.

The catch bag is a poor test. It's easily contaminated and then results are null and void. A lot of offices won't utilize them at all and will only cath as a sure way to get proper results.  I think that the pp who said the urine test they did on her LO "didn't work out well" prob used a catch bag,

this. We took Dd in for a random fever around 15 months and our dr said "getting a urine sample at this age is torture for all involved" (he thought dd might have a uti but wanted to give it 24 hours)

Yes it's easily contaminated but I would request to do that first anyway.  It's a lot simpler than doing a cath.

  • Weird, we had to do a urine test at 11 months because DD was growing super slow and they did a bunch of blood work and one thing came back abnormal.  The only way to check it was to do a blood test and a urine collection close together.  They actually gave us bags that stuck on her.  I can't say it was easy but we did collect the urine and it was non invasive.  And everything came back normal after that.

    but what was it for?

The finger prick was for anemia. The urine I didn't ask. They put the bag in her diaper, the first time got contaminated. The second time we got only a few drops in the bag (and a whole lot in the diaper) but they could work with it and just told us everything is fine.
