Swollen lymph node?

Hi Ladies,

I usually post on the second trimester board but also have a 5 year old and 2 year old and have a question that I thought you might have some experience with:

My 2 year old came down with the flu about 4 days ago. He's had a fever, cough and congestion on and off until yesterday but today just cough and congestion. I noticed what I think is a lymph node in the side of his neck this morning. It's about half an inch across and moves around when I touch it. He has one in the other side, just slightly smaller.

I googled it, which was really not a good idea. Admittedly, I am a total hypochondriac when it comes to my kids. Most of the things I came across said this was totally normal with the flu, but then I saw that it could cancer or something too!? And I freaked out a bit! DH says its not a big deal; he always gets those when he's sick. I'm hoping its just from the flu?

Have any of you had experience with this? Thanks for any input!

Re: Swollen lymph node?

  • It's probably just from the flu. It happens to me alllll the time. Sometimes when I'm sick and sometimes just because. I believe Antibiotics help with it but I usually just take an ibuprofen and apply a hot water bottle or wash cloth to the swollen area.

If they aren't gone a week after he gets over the flu then you may want to give your doctor a call. Good luck and I hope he feels better!

I agree with this. It happens to me too and scared me the first time I discovered it! But it was gone soon after I was better.

  • Pediatric nurse here...It's a good sign that you can move it. It's also a good sign that it is associated with illness. If ur child wer healthy and this occurred and it was solid and "fixed" I would tell u to see the dr. This sounds completely viral to me...no worries
  • Sounds like it's from the flu, but my DS had one two weeks ago and it turned out to be strep throat with no other symptoms!
