High Blood Pressure

I am almost 33 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child and had my normal routine doctor appointment yesterday. When I was there they checked my blood pressure 4 times and it kept rising, ending with 168/98. My doctor sent me to the hospital for testing, blood work, monitoring, and a non-stress test. My blood pressure came back down in the hospital and they sent me home. I am doing the urine protein test today, which was the last test he ordered. I did not have any issues with my first pregnancy and I'm worried about my blood pressure, as it is always great. Has anyone had to deal with this, and what were your results? I am worried about bed rest and my doctor mentioned that he may possibly not let me go to my due date.

Re: High Blood Pressure

  • I had high blood pressure at my last appointment (though not as high as yours.. it just raised a red flag with my doctor because my bp had been exactly the same for the past 7 months and now 3 times in a row it was slightly higher). He told me that it could be toxemia/pre-eclampsia, but that you would have other symptoms (which he told me to watch for). Some of these are: swelling, pain on your right side, headaches, and protein in your urine (obviously not something you can notice on your own). His suggestions were to take it easy and stay in bed for a couple days (I had another appointment 2 days later), drink a lot of water and only lay on my left side (which was very uncomfortable for me).

He also told me that if I did have toxemia/pre-e, I would be induced at 37 weeks.

Try not to worry about it too much, until they give you a definite answer, because that could raise your blood pressure too.

  • I had a high BP reading at my 28 week appt. and my doctor sent me for everything your doctor did, he put me on a BP medication and i go weekly for a non stress test. The medication has kept my BP in line and yesterday when i went for my NST it was a perfect 120/78. the doctor did put me off work and just told me to get lots of rest, keep my feet up as much as possible and keep drinking lots of water! He has not said anything about delivery yet.
  • I have pre-e and when my BP was about that, I was put on modified bedrest.  I can go to work but must rest when I get home.  When my BP went to the 180's/110's they started medication and decided to induce at 37 weeks.  I go for weekkly BPPs to make sure that everything is OK.  If you don't have any spilling of protein they will ususally have you monitor your BP at home for several days before making a diagnosis.

    Good luck!

  • With both of my previous pregnancies I developed high blood pressure towards the end of third trimester. I had to do NSTs every other day and they kept an eye on me, but I didn't have any other issues and went into labor on my own at 39 weeks and 37 weeks.
  • Yup, I've had slightly elevated blood pressure at my last four appointments, but 24-hour urine collection and blood work lab results all came back just fine.  The OB that went over my results on Monday wasn't concerned, since I have no other issues like quick weight gain or swelling, and didn't feel any of the symptoms of high BP in between appointments.  Sometimes pregnancy just causes slightly elevated blood pressure.

  • Thanks everyone! I have had a bad headache since last night and had slight swelling in my right ankle. then this morning I had a nosebleed. I just went back to the dr and they re-checked my BP. It was much better. Top number was slightly elevated for me but still okay. I just want the baby to be okay even though I'm not feeling well. The nurse is going to let the dr know and I'm waiting on a return call.
  • Just curious if there are stairs at your OBs office. Mine does and a couple appts ago my blood pressure was elevated so the nurse recommended taking the elevator and ever since it has been normal. I thought I'd share my experience incase it helps
  • I had to do the 24 hr urine collection bc my last three readings have been on the higher end. There was no protein in my urine, but since I still had a high reading I now have baby appointments once a week just to monitor it.

  • I am currently 30 weeks and have been having issues with my blood pressure since 28 weeks.  It just randomly spikes up.  One time it was 174/90, I am normally 110/60.  I have been sent the hospital for tests and monitoring also.  Everything checked out fine and my blood pressure came down.  Urine protein test also was ok.  My doctor just advised me to continue to monitor my blood pressure and when it spikes up to sit down and rest because it usually will come down.  Just it hard at times when  my job requires me to be up on my feet for long periods of time.  My doctor hasn't seemed to concerned about me working.
