Period Question

I have been getting sick and flu like symptoms starting about a day before my period and lasting through the last day of actual flow. I used to get it off and on when I was younger but my periods were so irregular I just let it go. It stopped for awhile and every once in awhile it would happen again but not frequently enough to be sure they were related. It started again last summer and has progressively gotten worse since then. It is now to the point where for the first couple days of my period I am almost incapacitated. I have a fever, aches, chills, feel disoriented, exhausted, headache, sore throat, swollen painful to the touch lymph nodes, occasionally I throw up. I know your immune system can be suppressed while you're on your period and that the blood loss can make you feel sick but I find it hard to believe I am getting the actual flu or strep throat which it feels like every single month and it starts before my actual period so it's not necessarily from the bleeding.

I am making an OB appointment because I had to leave work early yesterday and am already thinking about leaving today and it's only 9:30. I'm taking Ibuprofen for the fever and pain but I still feel like death.

Re: Period Question

  • I hope your Dr can figure out what the issue is so you can start feeling better really soon. Let us know what he says.

Definitely see the doctor. Maybe some sort of autoimmune thing? That must be awful to have every month. What if you stop your Period, like with birth control pills? Hope you get answers. Feel better.

I have PCOS and hormonal BC messes me up pretty bad. I am trying to avoid using it but I am open to trying it because I am so over being sick every month.

  • That is the craziest thing ever, Lopes! I really hope your doctor can figure out WTH is going on. I can't even imagine how horrible that is. Definitely let us know what you find out!

  • That sounds terrible. AF is a lot heavier now, but shorter. I get nausea and tired a few, days before and usually the first day of it . Mine feels like morning sickness, nothing as extreme as you are getting. I hope your dr can figure it out quickly.

  • Yikes, I have never heard of that.  I am sorry you are going through this every month.  That sounds miserable.  Glad you are going to the Dr- hopefully he can help stop the symptoms every month.

  • That really stinks!! I hope they can help you figure it out!!
  • This used to happen to a friend of mine.  Turned out she was ovulating twice a month with only one period. Her hormones were kicking her ass. She ended up having to go on a strong BCP and after a couple cycles her body figured itself out.
