Help.

Man.

Alright, so Ferber was great for nighttime sleep. Sergio went from needing a 45 minute rocking session, waking up multiple times a night, and not being able to put himself back to sleep, to falling asleep after a few minutes of talking to himself and being able to put himself back to sleep in the MOTN with a few sucks of his hands. It's been a godsend, really.

Until we started trying it for naps.

I know the key to any sleep training is consistency and I know the first few nights of Ferber were rough (it took about 2 hours for him to fall asleep) and I know that in the end, it ended up being worth it. But, for some reason, I just can't stick to this thing for naps. He just gets so tired and then I give in and just let him nap in my arms because he's exhausted.

Ferber says to end the nap after 30 minutes of crying. We lengthened it, per some advice from the Parenting ladies, because he rarely falls asleep in 30 minutes, to an hour. I put him down for a nap after 2 hours of awake time, which is when he shows signs of being tired. I do the same exact thing as bedtime; fan, heater on, humidifier, white noise. Nothing is different.

He'll scream for an hour, I'll pick him up, and he'll be screaming in an hour to go to sleep. So, back down he goes, he'll scream for another hour, and then get back up, repeat again. We've been doing it for about 3 days and he's taken maybe one 20 minute nap and one hour nap on all three days. Today, I just picked him up and let him sleep with me because he was just losing it at 6pm when he had only napped 25 minutes since 10am.

Should I stop? Is he just not ready? What am I doing wrong? Halllllp!

  • I'm sorry too, this is hard. Have you played around with his awake time?

Some kids are just not good at taking naps. My first was a Rockstar at night but pretty much the whole first year sucked with naps. Finally, once he was down to one afternoon nap, he got the hang of it.

Again, no real advice here. Just a sorry as I know it's hard. I do hope it gets better.

  • What are these things called naps that you speak of?   That shiz is unheard of in this house.  We have got nights down.  She will not nap at all.

  • I am having these problems too so today I messed with his awake time a little and that seemed to help. In the morning he seems to want to be up longer and in the afternoon it's less. I'm still at a loss though! Hang in there!

  • I am by far not an expert but here's what worked for us. DS used to always be held for naps or else he would not sleep. Eventually we moved to napping with him in our bed. We do not cosleep but he would take 2 hour naps in our bed. Then we moved to letting him CIO in bed with us. We wouldn't pick him up but we were right beside him rubbing his belly. Then we left him on our bed to CIO. Then we moved him to the crib with lots of soothing. Then, finally after Christmas we let him fuss it out in his crib. Now he goes down and might fuss some then he is sleeping! This was a long transition for us. We started when he was around three months old and he will be six months on the 30th.

Oh we also do the same thing as his nighttime routine and got room darkening curtains.
