XP Cough-Please help!!!

LO is coughing so hard he's throwing up repeatedly. It's been days since he's had a full meal in his stomach. To stop the coughing we've tried honey, cool mist humidifier while he sleeps, Benadryl (which he throws up with the next cough), Vic's baby rub on his feet, Eucalyptus steam showers, hot liquids to drink. NOTHING WORKS!!! The pedi said we're doing all the right things, and there is nothing else we can do.

I'm panicking because he's naturally at the 15th % for weight and can't afford to throw up all his food. Not to mention, he can't sleep AT ALL. I'm afraid he's not going to get well if he can't sleep and keeps throwing up all his food.

Have any of you found anything that works??? Please? I'm getting desperate. I'm about to go out and buy childrens cough syrup and just half the dose or something.

-He's just thrown up again for the third time in 30 minutes.-

AGHHHHH!

  • I read on pinterest if you rub Vic's Vapor Rub on their feet and cover with socks its suppose to help much more then the chest. I havent tried it yet. I do warm baths for my kids and then set up a humidifier in their room. I heard honey helps but it didn't help that great with my kids.

  • By the way I have a 4.5 and 2 year old and Ive given my 2 year old children's night time medicine when she was sick before because the poor thing just needed to sleep. I just cut the dosage. It really helped her get some rest.

  • DD1 had a similar cough last year, I've never cleaned up so much vomit in my life!  We did all the things you did and it just took time to resolve. I think the only other thing we did was elevate her mattress, which helped.

I know Hylands has a natural, homeopathic cough syrup for toddlers. I've never used, but it may be worth a shot.

Good luck, I know how helpless it feels to not make it better.

Seriously, you're not kidding. Poor kiddo. He throws up every 4th time he coughs. I'm desperate to help him.

  • Our pedi told us that we can give 1/2 teaspoon of delsym (sp?) for kids every 12 hours. It has helped with my DD's cough.
  • Did the doctor say if he was wheezing too?  My son had something similar about a year ago, and the only thing that really helped were nebulizer treatments (he was wheezing pretty badly too).  He still didn't eat much for a week, but he stopped throwing up once we got the coughing somewhat under control and was sometimes willing to eat soup or drink milk.

Pedi didn't say anything about wheezing. I was hoping that they would do some kind of breathing treatment when we took him in yesterday. They just keep telling me to give him honey. I guess they don't believe me when I tell them that it DOESN'T work!!

I'm really sorry to hear that!  It does nothing for my little man either....  He's also a small fry, so I know what you're going through.  I hope he starts feeling better soon!

  • My insurance company has a helpline that has a nurse, can you do that?  Or can you call afterhours & speak to your drs on call staff & get a different opinion?  Or go to urgentcare?  Your dr may not be right, it sounds like you have good mother's instincts-I would def get another opinion.  Sounds like a case for dehydration too.  Children's hospital?  Do something!

I think I am going to get a 2nd opinion. I feel like the pedi's either not listening to me or isn't taking things seriously enough. Thanks for the encouragement.

  • poor baby- maybe he has a respiratory infection- I know last time my daughter was sick (shes 27 months) with an ear infection she had a cough that would not quit- they gave her augmentin (sp) and it really helped bc it suppose to fight respiratory stuff as well as any bacterial infection.

    hope he feels better!
